FEBRUARY 1963 KENNETH W. WEEKS, EDWARD J. HANLON

As these few notes are put together on New Year's Day it appears that December has been an unusually busy month for all of you and yours, - preparing for the holidays with the children, and the grandchildren. Not many have found time to add to the secretary's class notes for this February issue, - and here is all I have been able to round up for you this month.

Lt. Col. (Marines) Jack Cannon, formerly of Grosse Pointe, Mich., is now reported to be with the Defence-Space Group of Chrysler Corporation, with offices at 1700 "K" Street, N.W., Washington 6, D. C. Jack and the family are living at 6016 Bradley Boulevard, Bethesda 14, Md. A request for details of Jack's new assignment has not yet produced any response. Perhaps it is "classified" the same as most everything else in Washington.

Charlie Starrett, our Hollywood hero, and star of many exciting Western pictures, but now labeled by Hanover as a "retired actor," has moved from Laguna Beach to June Lake, Calif. If you do not have your atlas handy, June Lake is just East of Yosemite National Park, - and is perhaps 180 miles East of San Francisco.

Courtney Brown, our new TV star, appeared for 13 consecutive Sundays this fall and winter on Channel 4 in a program sponsored by the Graduate School of Business at Columbia. The title of the series of half-hour shows was "Let's Talk Business." Courtney also starred as a fund raiser extraordinaire. He literally raised millons of dollars for the new eight-story Graduate School of Business now being built on the Columbia campus. Courtney's wife, Marjorie, a professional decorator, is devoting most of her time on the plans for the interior decorating of the new edifice. They took a brief respite at Sea Island over New Year's.

The national chairman of the 1963 Heart Fund Campaign is none other than our own George Champion, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chase Manhattan Bank. The Heart Fund Campaign started early this month (February 1963) and on Heart Sunday, February 24, thousands of volunteers will be ready to canvass their neighborhoods across the nation. With unlimited energy and determination, George serves many organizations in a variety of capacities. These include the United Negro College Fund, the Japan Society, Crusade for Freedom, Independent College Funds of America, Business and Education Council of New York, the Greater New York Fund, and Protestant Council of New York.

Don Church writes from Belleair, Fla., where he is Manager of the Belleview-Bilt-more, to report an excellent winter season in spite of encephalitis, Castro, and the mid-December freeze which struck many parts of Florida. He reports that the golf course has never been in better shape, and he hopes to see some of the 1926 gang in Belleair this winter. By early May Don and Gladys will be returning north where Don will again manage the Oyster Harbors Club at Osterville, Mass.

Malcolm Merrill, manager of the family-owned Lookout Hotel at Ogunquit, Me., and his wife, Ann are spending the winter at their winter home in Tudson, Ariz. They are thoroughly sold on Ogunquit during the summer months, but are most enthusiastic about southern Arizona and Mexico during the winter months. Ken and Helen Weeks now plan to visit briefly with the Merrills in Tucson some time in March. Perhaps at that time we can arrange a small class reunion with Del and Billie Worthington and Frankand Claire Poor, and possibly others who may be in that vicinity. Ken Weeks worked with Mai Merrill and Ted Greeley at the Merrills' Lookout Hotel in Ogunquit during the summers of 1926-1930.

Class Treasurer Ed Hanlon reports that there has been a good response to the class dues notices sent out early this fall. However, as of January 1 Ed reports approximately 125 still unpaid. The ALUMNI MAGAZINE, which you receive with regularity ten times a year, is paid for out of the Class Treasury. If the Class is to continue to pay for the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, all those who regularly receive it should hurry to get their check for class dues on the way to Ed Hanlon.

In this column last November we reported a temporary address change of Henry(Ted) Greeley, from Palm Springs, Calif., to the Kaiserslautern American High School. Ted has been principal of the Palm Springs, Calif., High School since 1949. He received a sabbatical leave of absence to take a teaching position with the Army Dependents Schools in Europe. Kaiserslautern is centrally located so that short weekend trips into France, Switzerland, and the Benelux countries are readily accomplished. Ted and Laura have already explored the surrounding countryside and nearby cities, such as Worms, Bonn, Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich, Nuremburg, and Vienna. During the Christmas vacation they spent Christmas in Rome, and New Year's Eve in Monte Carlo. Ted's address, for those who may wish to drop him a note, is Kaiserslautern American High School, Kaiserslautern Post, APO 227, New York, N. Y.

BUI Sharp for many years manager and owner of Sharp's Market in Greenwich, N. Y., recently sold this family meat and grocery business. Bill and Miriam celebrated by taking a month's vacation - the first time they have been able to get away for so long in 36 years. Bill and Miriam now have six grandchildren, sons and daughters of Bill Jr., Class of 'SO. Their younger son David has just started service in the Navy.

Walfrid ("Shorty" 6 foot 5) Bengston, for 35 years in the Engineering Department of New York Telephone Company, is back on the job following minor surgery at the Greenwich (Conn.) Hospital. Son Paul is with U.S. Public Health Service, working on air pollution. Daughter Margaret is at the University of Connecticut, and daughter Elizabeth is with the New York Hospital.

Your secretary hopes to be able to include in the February issue area reports from our eight regional vice-chairmen, Dick Husband, Hal Marshall. Don Norstrand, Hank Parker, Perk St. Clair, Ritchie Smith, Bob Stopford, and Jim Traquair.

Secretary, Box 305, Elmwood Branch Hartford 10, Conn.

Treasurer, 6 Stanwich Rd., Greenwich, Conn.
