Captain Jerry Ash worth has returned from the Pan American Games in Brazil where a pulled muscle prevented him from competing. The same injury kept him out of the sprints in the Heptagonals, but he did run the first leg of the mile relay. His fast 48.5 for the 440 gave the Indians a 25-yard lead and helped them to place third even though they were entered in the slow heat.
In the Heps; Dartmouth was ninth in the ten-team field, beating only Columbia. This was due in great measure to Ashworth's inability to run in the sprints and Tom Holzel's failure to place in the 440. Holzel, injured in an automobile accident in mid-April, had returned to competition only a week before but like Ashworth competed well only in the mile relay.
A highlight of the annual Heps was Pete Wells' third-place finish in the twomile run. His 9:15.9 was his best time for this event. Bob Cahners' fifth in the hammer throw was the only other Green score as Dartmouth garnered only six and a half points.
In dual meet competition the Indians are still looking for victory number one. Harvard ran up a lopsided score of 117-32 in the spring opener and Holy Cross edged the Green 74-64. This marked the first Crusader victory in a series which dates back to 1926. Wells was a double winner in the Holy Cross meet, winning both the mile and twomile, and Eric Thompson was second in both events.
