As Penn came to town to open the Ivy League season, Dartmouth found itself in the role of an underdog with the Quakers rated six points better. Still smarting from its close shave with UNH and determined to prove the predictions wrong, the Big Green took the field ready to show itself.
It looked like, and was, a different team from that which had played against New Hampshire. Dartmouth scored after only three and a half minutes of the first quarter when an errant pass by the Penn center went into the end zone. A Penn back fell on the ball, but he was tackled by Persels and the Green was awarded a safety.
The Indians pulled ahead further at 10:41 of the same period, this time with a touchdown. With third down and three inches to go on the Penn 39, Kinderdine gambled that the Quaker defense would be drawn in tight. He faked a hand-off and then looked down field for a receiver.
Persels had outdistanced the Penn secondary, which was still looking for the rush, and was all alone at the Penn 10 when he took the pass. Gerfen kicked the extra point and Green led 9-0.
For the next two periods the teams battled back and forth, but only once did Penn get as deep as the Green 17. The final Dartmouth touchdown came late in the game on a seven-yard plunge by Rozycki. The touchdown was set up by McElhinney's recovery of a Penn fumble on their 12-yard line.
The game was not without heartbreaks, however, as three Indians were sent to the sidelines with injuries— Persels, Mooney and second-string end John Henry. Of the three, only Henry is back in action at this writing.
It was Dartmouth's day to shine, though, and to serve notice on the rest of the league to beware. To quote TheNew York Times, in reference to the Big Green, "Their play execution was sparkling, their pass defense excellent, and their blocking and tackling superb."
Right halfback Al Rozycki (36) showed why he is Dartmouth's leading ground-gainer as hefought his way seven yards through the Penn line for the Green's final touchdown. Dartmouth upset the favored Quakers, 15-0, on Memorial Field.
