Debate Champions Honored
JULY 1963

A DINNER in honor of the Dartmouth debate team that won the national intercollegiate championship at West Point this spring was given by the College on June 13. The gathering of students, alumni, faculty, and College officers, in the Drake Room of Hopkins Center, was the occasion also for paying tribute to Coach Herbert L. James.

Trustee Roswell Magill 'l6 presided and former Trustee Sigurd S. Larmon '14 was present to speak and to make a special presentation of the Sigurd S. Larmon Trophy, symbolic of the national championship, to Frank H. Wohl '63 and Steven P. Kessler '63, the two-man team that brought the 1963 title to Hanover. Dartmouth held the handsome silver cup once before, when it won the nationals at West Point in 1960.

In his remarks Mr. Larmon paid high tribute to Professor James, who has coached debate at Dartmouth since 1950, and presented him with a wrist watch in appreciation of his remarkable coaching record. Dartmouth has qualified for the West Point tournament in eleven of the past fifteen years, and in eight of those eleven years has been in the finals, made up of the top sixteen teams.

In his response Professor James reviewed the Forensic Union program and record, and spoke especially of the dedication of the students active in debating. President Dickey also paid tribute to those who have built up Dartmouth's shining reputation in intercollegiate debating, and in speaking of the value and importance of this activity he had special praise for Mr. Larmon, who is actively interested in encouraging debate in all the schools and colleges of the country.

President Dickey presented certificates of merit to nineteen men who were outstanding in debate at Dartmouth. Nine who were present were: Russell C. Dilks '51, Robert H. Gile '56, Lloyd L. Weinreb '57, Ronald L. Snow '58, Anthony Z. Roisman '60, Lawrence C. Wilson '61, Frank G. Mahady '61, Stephen P. Kessler '63, and Frank H. Wohl '63. Other recipients are: W.
