AN OIL PORTRAIT of Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, commissioned by a group of his friends, was unveiled and presented to the College in an informal ceremony in the Drake Room of Hopkins Center on March 22. Shown with the portrait, above, are (left to right) Peter Michael Gish '49, the artist; Mr. Hayward; Corey Ford of the celebrated Class of '—; and Parker Merrow '25, who made the presentation on behalf of the group of men who had the painting done.
"Many of our prime motivations are based on sentiment, on loyalty and on idealism," said Mr. Merrow in his presentation remarks. "But sentiment, loyalty and idealism have no actual value until they are brought to a durable, cutting impact edge. Sidney Hayward's life has been largely devoted, directly and indirectly, to creating concrete action from our Dartmouth loyalties. Wherever you go on this campus you can see the results, idealism translated into reality, and you can feel the impact of his influence."
Acceptance of the portrait, on behalf of the College, was made by Albert I. Dickerson '30, Dean of Freshmen, who has been an administrative colleague of Mr. Hayward's for the past 33 years. After thanking the donors and the artist, who is studying art at Yale, Mr. Dickerson said that many hundreds of Mr. Hayward's friends gladly would have participated in the tribute to him had they been given the opportunity.
"This is not the occasion," he said, "for a recital of all that Sid Hayward has done for Dartmouth, and all that he has meant to his friends, through all these years. Let us just leave it at this, and leave it in the form of a question: Who can think of another who can match these Hayward years: who can match these years in dedication to Dartmouth, or in warmth, or in resourcefulness, or in vigor, or in imagination, or in humor . . . and in numbers, too?"
The Gish portrait shows the Secretary of the College in a relaxed pose. The photograph above provides proof that it is also a very characteristic pose.
The donors of the portrait included Ernest M. Hopkins 'Ol, EdwardS. French '06, John H. Hinman 'OB, Sigurd S. Larmon '14, Harvey P. Hood '18, Ellis O. Briggs '21, Ellwood H. Fisher '21, Orton H.
