As the summer begins to wane and the first cool breezes wend their way down from the north country into central New England, your new Scribe must put aside a refreshing glass of spirits (one cannot in good conscience partake of water in the parched Northeast now) and take up the quill, which passed from the faithful and dedicated hand of the Class humorist, ScottOlin, into a paw which by occupation concerns itself mostly with figures - mathematical ones, that is - rather than words.
The passing officially took place at Fabulous 50's Fabulous Fifteenth in June, an occasion which those of us fortunate enough to attend will long remember as a highly successful reunion; our attendance was a record-breaker, and we sincerely recommend that all of you make every effort to get to the Hanover Plain for all such future events. If Eric Miller performs anywhere near as well as your new class treasurer as he did as reunion chairman, he'll be eminently successful - and won't run afoul of the auditors (but if any of you insurance men out there consider him bondable, please furnish incoming Chairman JohnDwyer a quotation!).
Since we didn't vote out dues during the proceedings, please note that Treasurer Miller's vault is at 281 Pondfield Road, Bronxville, N. Y., while John will take recommendations, complaints or what have you at 445 East Glen Avenue, Ridgewood, N. J. 07450.
Here in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE I'll endeavor to set forth all the pertinent facts which you send in to 7 Fiske Road, Wellesley Hills, Mass. 02181 (that's really part of Wellesley, fellas, but at the opposite end of town from that fine women's college which many of you know so well - it seems that the distaff side of this family wanted to locate at least out of eyesight of that campus). Equally important in the dissemination of class news, particularly that requiring the "full treatment," will be the efforts of "50-50" Newsletter Editor Alexander Medlicott, who very appropriately is located at the Department of English, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn. 06268. Needless to say, we both have to receive the scoop on you-all before we can pass it on, so please make a note of our addresses and send material in - regularly. Another man who hopes to hear, directly or indirectly, from you at the appropriate time of year is your new Class Agent, Norman McCulloch who resides at 44 Adams Point Road, Barrington, R. I. 02806.
Now let's check the other results of the nominating committee's production of executive committee staff. (Not only did CliftWhiteman perform in superb fashion as toastmaster in Hanover, but the railroad company he ran beforehand would have won the respect of oF Jim Fisk of the Erie). These fellows all are expected to take an active role in your class affairs during the coming five years, so don't hesitate to contact them either. By states we have: California - Dave Bull, c/o Severson, Zang, Werson, Berke & Larson, 433 California Street, San Francisco; Connecticut - Charlie Gardner, 101 Silvermine Road, New Canaan and Gerry Sarno, Stanwich Lane, Greenwich; Washington, D. Scotty covered the Hanover happenings very well in the last ALUMNI MAGAZINE, except possibly for one observation: the Class still is in the process of adding to the world population explosion. Several announcements will be forthcoming but let's backtrack to note the arrival in October, 1964 of Alan R. Mitchell Jr. to the Al Mitchells of Madison, N. J., and in the same month of William D. Hollands to Dick Hollands' household in Miami.
News from the business field begins in Hanover where Phil Garran has established himself as proprietor of the Hobby House; according to my beer-stained notes it is on Main Street while Phil and family reside at 39 E. Wheelock. It should be an interesting place to browse in when you visit Hanover for a football game or other occasion. Speaking of traveling, the good word is in that Henry H. Barnes is the new secretary and comptroller of Treadway Inns Corporation; Hank, Susan and their three children reside at 251 Daley Boulevard, Rochester, N. Y. Another businessman making the news lately is Bill Tarlow, vice president of Brockton Footwear, Inc., Brockton, Mass., who received the American Shoe Designer Award for 1965. Bill's firm makes an extensive line of golf shoes and men's dresscasual shoes, including the Foot-loy and Ben Hogan brands; his styling innovations in these lines have been widely acclaimed. Meanwhile, down in Atlanta, Ga., Douglas A. Smith has been elected a vice president of the Citizens & Southern National Bank. Doug is manager of the International Department and has done much to promote exports. Bill, lune and their three children live at 447 Valley Green Drive, N.E., Atlanta.
Tom Tomasi was one of eleven to be awarded a Ph.D. degree in June from the Rockefeller Institute in New York, a unique graduate university that accepts only advanced students preparing for careers as university teachers in sciences and mathematics. Tom, who also has an M.D. degree from the University of Vermont School of Medicine, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at that school and chairman of the Division of Experimental Medicine. He is author of numerous scientific articles, senior investigator of the Arthritis and Rheumatism Association, and (to move sharply from medicine) a resident of Burlington, Vt. - with his wife Barbara and three children - his hometown.
Academically speaking, we were very pleased to learn that Ohio State University granted Max Welborn Jr. the Doctor of Philosophy degree in June, and John H.Caldwell received the degree of Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University, earned through its Graduate Summer School for Teachers. A hearty "well done" goes to Max at 220 S. Beech, Oxford, Ohio, and to John at the Putney School, Putney, Vt.
We'll close this first effort of the season by hoping that all you ex-Ledyard Canoe Club men and other outdoor enthusiasts read "Down the Danube by Canoe" in the July National Geographic, a most interesting account of Ledyard men's travels from the Black Forest to the Black Sea in 1964.
