The season's football opener against the University of Massachusetts saw Frank Harrington leading a strong Paul Revere Corporation contingent to Amherst. The Dartmouth band played lustily as the Worcester squad disembarked from their chartered bus, whereupon independent insurance agent BillSullivan brilliantly quarterbacked a successful drive against a formidable line of beer kegs. The next sequence saw the troops charge into the attractive new stadium of UMass, where they were temporarily stopped by the sight of a comely squaw perambulating in the proximity of the head Indian cheerleader. Alas, she was not there to vociferate for the Big Green cause, but was fluttering her feathers on behalf of the Redmen. Our heroes regrouped their forces, and thereafter maintained an immovable line in Section 15. A pall of pessimism prevailed, however, as the capers of the redshirts commanded the contest until late in the second quarter when the Big Green took custody of the saturated soil, went into the lead via the long-bomb route and were not seriously challenged for the remainder of the game.
