The College has received $50,000 through the bequest of Thomas W. Streeter '04, who died June 12 at the age of 81, "to establish a scholarship fund in honor of my friend Basil O'Connor of the Class of 1912."
Basil O'Connor, President of The National Foundation (March of Dimes) and former President of the American National Red Cross, and Mr. Streeter were long-time friends and former associates in the law firm of Streeter and Holmes in Boston from 1916 to 1919. Both men subsequently moved on to New York City and separate careers in business, law, and public service, but maintained close ties over the years. A founding member of the Friends of the Dartmouth Library, Mr. Streeter worked to expand the College's resources of books and manuscripts. One of his final gifts to Dartmouth provided for a special room in Baker Library to house the books and furniture of the George Ticknor Collection.
