THIS YEAR'S Interfraternity Play Contest has been one of the most successful in the 30-year history of the project," said Professor Henry Williams, and he should know! He's been involved in Dartmouth dramatics for 34 years.

From a dozen or more productions of superior quality the preliminary judges were hard pressed to select four to be played again for the benefit of the finals judges. The finals judges rated the four in the following order: first, Alpha Theta's A Girl from Vienna, a script by Donald Gold '51 that was produced by Pi Lambda Phi in the interfraternity competion i n the early '50's; second, Delta Upsilon's Humulus, the Mute by Jean Anouilh; third, Pi Lambda Phi's TheMarriage Proposal by Anton Chekhov; and fourth, Sigma Phi Epsilon's selection from Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, titled The Boar's Head.

The plays staged in the Studio Theatre of the Hopkins Center were student-directed, acted, constructed, lighted and, in four cases, student-written. However, the undergraduates didn't have to go it completely alone for Professor Williams was a willing adviser. The over-all responsibility for the competition was shared by Student Director Peter Crown- field '66, Technical Director Benjamin Moore '67, and Production Coordinator Bradford Stein '66.

Ann Sachs, daughter of Dr. Ernest Sachs Jr. of the Medical Schoolfaculty, rehearses scene with Bryce Harbaugh '65 in Alpha Theta play.

The full cast for Alpha Theta's first-place entry in the fraternity compe-tition included (l to r) Ralph Cohen '67, Jerry Zaks '67, Bill Gruber '66,Harbaugh, and Miss Sachs. Harbaugh later put on a beard.

Alpha Theta's director Dewitt Jones '65 steps aside momentarily to allow Prof. Henry Williams opportunity to suggestnew moves on stage. Jones led Alpha Theta for second year.

Ralph Cohen and Jerry Zaks demonstrate the spirited actingthat helped Alpha Theta impress the competition's judges.

Noel Fidel '66, the lead in Pi Lambda Phi's Chekhovplay, gets help with his costume from Grace Geier.

Award-winning director David Feldshuh '65 makes hisadjustments to Fidel's costume before curtain call.

Awaiting his cue, the now fully-attired Fidel stops tochat with Delta Upsilon director-carpenter Bruce Lawder '66. DU's Anouilh drama earned second honors.
