Dartmouth celebrated its 213 th consecutive Commencement on Sunday, June 12th, awarding nearly 1300 degrees before a sun-drenched audience of some 8,000 onlookers. Honorary degrees were awarded to seven, among them, two sons of Dartmouth, Justin A. Stanley '33, former president of the American Bar Association, and Paul Tsongas '62, United States Senator from Massachusetts. For the first time since 1971, the ceremonies included a Commencement speaker, Paul A. Volcker, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, who discussed the economic prospects for the graduates of the Class of 1983. Valedictorian Stephen Jennings '83 of Burlington, Vt. challenged Mr. Volcker's assessment and urged his classmates to maintain their idealism and "civic conscience." Though the sound amplifiers faded on and off at various times, WDCR Radio helped out by providing mobile public address speakers for the audience. {In the Commencement section of thisissue are full texts of the graduation speeches, along with Rev. Ah, when to the heart of man Was it ever less than a treason To go with the drift of things, To yield with a grace to reason, And bow and accept the end Of a love or a season? Robert Frost '96, from "Reluctance."
