Jim Doyle writes he is on the home stretch of his business career at Johns Manville as he retires next November 30 after 38 years with the company. "Will probably visit all of our districts from coast to coast before that date in order to leave things neat and tidy. This will take me pretty much to all corners of the U.S. That is if these old bones will take it."

Doyle. Nick is staying with the Delta Dulting Company with no thought of retiring. Nick Andretta's wife Angella passed away last August. They were married 42 years. On a trip east for Christmas Nick talked over the phone with his old roommate Jim

Johnny Coonley writes from 3170 Noela Drive, Honolulu, that he took early retirement, then had a heart attack which kept him out of mischief for some time. Then he worked on a special project for the EastWest Center at the University, now he does occasional civic jobs and is told he will live to be 100.

O. Thompson (Tommy) Griffin has retired from the lumber and building supply business. He writes he is occupied with rented properties which he owns - apartments, residential and small stores - also an insurance agency. Tommy finds time to teach interior decoration. He and Gladys have six grandchildren.

It is a joy to get a letter from Bill Gratz. He writes "News of 1923 here is nonexistent. There are only two left - George McLaughlin who married Ted Gaver's widow and myself. Lynch - Bishop - Gaver - Seveney all dead. Paul Pletke in Winona, McKaron in San Francisco."

Bill retired in early 1962 from a vice presidency of the First National Bank of St. Paul. That fall of '62 he and Margaret took a six-month trip around the world. The spring of '63 they spent a month fishing Atlantic salmon on the St. Johns River in Canada. Results: eight rods took 225 fish. The fall of that year was devoted to ducks, ruffed grouse, and woodcock.

The spring of '64 Portugal and all over Europe. Home in September just in time for bird season. "Retirement," says Bill, "is a great thing. I'm certain that man was never meant to be tied to a desk."

Phil DeBerard is certainly enjoying his retirement. Tending to his orchid collection and playing duplicate bridge fill in his spare time while he is not traveling around Florida with his wife Ella who is currently president of the Democratic Women's Club of Florida. The DeBerards are looking forward to attending the installation of James McFate (of Hanover Inn fame) as president of the National Hotel Association in Miami next January. Jim and Beth McFate used to live in Orlando.

Frank Macedon bumped into Phil Bowker at the railroad station in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., last Christmas. Frank has been spending the winter in Florida for 19 years while his summers are spent at Cataumet on Cape Cod. Phil says Frank still has his big smile and cheery greeting. Phil had Ted Swartzbaugh at the Kiwanis Club in January. In this club Phil has had a perfect attendance for 22 years.

We quote the Fort Lauderdale News: "An elevated rail rapid transit system using air rights over the Florida East Coast Railroad right of way bumped head on Friday into Mayor Cy Young's plan for a super highway in that same air space.

"Phil Bowker, retired Massachusetts state senator and former vice chairman of that state's mass Transportation Commission, announced the rapid transit plan today. Bowker said he and other retired rapid and mass transportation people have formed an organization called Area Transit Associates to push the idea of a 70-mile rapid transit system from Palm Beach to Miami.

"At the organization meeting Friday Bowker was elected president, Peter J. Minck, vice president, Frank Turner, treasurer, and Clifford N. Cann, secretary. Bowker said this group feels a rapid transit system could be constructed for $2 million a mile compared to the $5 million or more a mile needed for Mayor Young's highway. We feel a rail rapid transit system would be an immediate help to easing the problems of downtown areas in cities through which the line would travel, said Bowker."

Ward and Sally Hilton now live at 931 Forest Avenue 60202 in Evanston, Ill. Ward is superintendent of the bond department of the Western Department of Hartford Insurance Company. He plans to retire in a year. By the way, Ward's Sally and BillWallace's Jane are twin sisters.

Irish Flanigan '23 submitted this shot ofclassmate Chet Bixby taken by LenMarshall during freshman year. He declined to send a caption. Suggestions?
