All of the class may not know that HarryMackinnon now lives in Florida. His address is 525 Yelvington Ave., Clearwater. As you will remember he was a member of the first basketball team at Dartmouth, of which Guy Abbott was captain. Mac came to college from Bellows Falls with our poet, Kendall Banning. If memory serves, that team was made up entirely of '02 men; George Newman and Harry Mackinnon were the forwards, George Hubbard was center, and Ben Ailing and Guy Abbott, guards. And now only Mac is left. Even Bissell Hall, where the games were played has disappeared. Does this make us sad? Not at all! We rejoice that Mac is still with us and that we have our memories.
If this seems too recent, we can add a footnote to Phil Thompson's discoveries from the memorabilia of his uncle, Dr. John Thompson, Dartmouth 'B2. Phil found there a printed program of athletic sports which were held at Dartmouth, Oct. 1, 1879. It includes some rather unusual events, at least to us. There was: best three jumps (the winner went 27 ft. 3 inches), standing high jump (4 ft.) and the hundred yard dash, backwards.
But three years later the sports had really developed. At the first stroke of the 9 o'clock college bell, 4 contestants started around a 1/5 mile oval on the "Go as You Please" 3-hour run. At the first stroke of the 12 o'clock noon bell, the winner had made 20.9 miles. One other starter was close behind and two had dropped out.
The field events included in addition to the regular events of today, a three-legged race and a sack race, each of 100 yards, a potato race (15 potatoes, 15 feet apart, to be picked up, one at a time), throwing the baseball, kicking the football, hop, skip and jump, running the bases, and a final consolation race for those who had not won any points.
Phil also reports from the same source the program of a meet held at Amherst which included the same events but wound up with a Cake Walk! At this meet, the following records were made: Hop, skip and jump, 38'6"; throwing baseball, 318' 11"; kicking football, 156'; standing high jump, 4'10"; backward dash, 14 seconds, running bases, 15 seconds.
