Phil Thompson says that the "now and then" stories he has been writing for the class notes certainly date him. He has however decided to delve further into the past. He has just been reading some of the memorabilia kept by his uncle, Dr. John Thompson, who graduated from Dartmouth in 1882. They show that in our college days we were still carrying on a custom in vogue in 1879.
In that year the Dartmouth sophomores held their class banquet at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal on Washington's birthday. In our day, it was the established custom to hold our freshman banquet in Boston and our sophomore banquet in Montreal on February 22, Hanover being equidistant from the two cities.
Phil continues: — "Since it happened that I was class president our sophomore year, I went on the Montreal trip with about 20 classmates, and we did have a glorious three days. We rode about the city and up Mont Royale in low red and yellow sleighs, tucked into large fur robes. It seemed like a foreign city with French signs everywhere — in the houses 'Apartment a louer' and in public places - 'Strictement defendu de fumer ou de cracher.' At the theater, we saw a comedy in French, and I learned more of that language than I had under Professor Dow and he was a grand teacher. We saw the famous 'lce Palace' and the hotel gave us a real banquet at a reasonable rate."
