Of all the crazy times to be caught with a lot of news, this is it. The instructions from GHO are to keep the column short, so all you fine Alumni Fund contributors can be duly listed ... and this is the first time in many moons that I could have legitimately eaten up lots of space. So ... with apologies to BeanyThorn for holding his letter till next month, and to those others whose newsworthy doings must remain an item between us for another thirty days, I'll get to the three headline items. (1) Bill Steck, new Class Agent; (2) RedRolfe lets it on the line; (3) '31 up!
We have been wallowing around in a kingsize quandary ever since Bill Minehan turned in his uniform as class agent. Who in the world could follow a performance like his, or like those which preceded it? The list was threshed, winnowed and culled, and that one name kept popping up ... Bill Steck! Would he do it? We had just gotten word that Bill's beautiful home in the Wickliffe section of Cleveland had been shattered by an explosion that literally tore out one complete wall and caused many thousands of dollars worth of damage. Bill and Betty were in New York at the time it happened, but the four youngsters, Bill, Margie, Susan and Peter were all at home with their grandfather. Nobody was hurt, but you can imagine that Bill must have had plenty on his mind since the big bang. Shortly thereafter, he was sitting in his den, gazing out into open space where there used to be a wall, and the telephone rang. It was Bill Minehan asking him if he would take on the job. Anybody who would say yes under those conditions is a great guy and deserves the big cheer ... and, above all, the wholehearted cooperation of every other '31er.
This column is being written immediately after returning from a lunch at the Statler, where we heard Red Rolfe outline the picture of athletics at Dartmouth, and what the big Redhead has to say sounds good to those of us who think it's about time that the title "Big Green" begin to fit our teams a little more snugly. The hundreds who were at the lunch gave ample testimony of their faith in Red and in his ability to do a job that has to be done. Around the '31 table were: Len Clark, RedGristede, Barney Ash, Dick Holbrook, BillWilson, Bill Steck, Dan Denham, Mel Levison,Bill Seney, Ralph Nims, Charlie McAllister.
The call has gone out to all the members of the executive committee for a meeting in New York, planned tentatively for January 22. The main items on the agenda are plans for the 25th reunion (which is only 19 months away), selecting the chairman for the reunion, and also the further development of plans for building the 1931 Memorial Fund. Also, such things as whether we're going to have a 25year classbook ... what kind should it be ... and, most important, who would be the best editor for it. These are mighty important items and we are hoping the entire committee can turn out for it.
Well, those are the main items. Keep on being '31. See you next month.
