According to the calendar, - spring is here. And that means that when spring is here in 1965, June, and our 55-year reunion dates, cannot be far off. This chapter of the Tenner chronicle is being put together late in April. So, when most of the Tenners not in Hanover for the big event - think of it, a 55-year celebration — will have the privilege of perusing this issue of the MAGAZINE, that smaller group of hardy souls who always take advantage of opportunities to get together in the spirit of 1910, will be enjoying the Hanover scene and making the most of it. Some of these will have traveled many miles. There will be a sizable delegation from Florida, because so many Tenners have chosen that Sunshine State for their permanent homes and because such a high percentage of these Dartmouth-Floridians are such easy marks when they hear the cry, "Ten Up." And that last bit is important. Before this reaches you, there will have come to you the opportunity to get aboard. We are hoping now that a lot more will have decided to join. For the non-attenders there will be a tale of what happened and who was there, in the July MAGAZINE.
On his questionnaire returned by Mai Bissell, he noted the fact that he and Ella hope to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on June 30. I presume there have been quite a number of such events in Tenner families during the past couple of years. A check of what records we have shows that 1913, 1914 and 1915 are the years when a lot of Tenners stepped off. But it is just this last fall and this year that mention of these events has come to our attention. Talk about "controlled press releases," many Tenners have very definitely been practicing it. We would like to have our attention called to these anniversaries. They are something to be proud of. I missed ours by four years so I would like to mention each and every one that is accomplished. Please take note.
Mai, a Californian, added this to his return: "Why don't more Tenners try Mexico for the winter? It's much more interesting than Florida and a lot cheaper. Also sunny and no cold waves! Many beautiful spots, too, and Mexican beer is the world's best." What with Mai sounding off this way and Paul Albert crying the virtues of Arizona, we could start a real argument in Hanover.
One of the interesting bits of information which the Class questionnaires are turning up is that which tells of the places where Tenners have seen in their "travels." Some are doing it now as a post card from SandySandberg from Spain indicates. His message: "I think we are blessed to be able to write this. Warmest greetings. Tonight I have a cold and cannot go to the Fiesta, but thank the Lord we can be here and spend the winter. Come and join us." Bones Jones, also, received a card from Sandy which he passed along to me with the comment: "If we could get some personal news from Sandy, I bet it would be interesting to us retired guys." We'll try, Bones. One of our old-timers will be taking his vacation abroad just at the wrong time and will therefore, not be with us in June. Brown Cooper writes that he has a long trip in prospect covering all the high spots over quite a period of time.
From time to time we receive comments from the widows in our group, Mrs. Harold Winship, writes: "I do want to thank you or whoever it is that is so kind as to still send me the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE. I enjoy it very much and I am happy to still have it." From Mrs. Frank Fleming: "Am grateful for the ALUMNI MAGAZINE each month and all the letters and cards. It is nice to be remembered."
Whit Eastman in his final report for the winter states that he contacted 15 Tenners and three widows of Tenners, as he traveled over the southeast corner of the U.S.A. He is a real roving ambassador and does a great deal to keep the College and 1910 up front in the minds of those he meets. More travels to him!
Our Treasurer, Mac Kendall, has sent the figures showing how many of our group have paid Class dues in each of the past five years. The drop shows a loss of 22 men. As Mac comments: "Quite consistent with the calendar and ill health contributing to our decrease." If this item should meet the eye of some Tenners who are quite able financially but who have let this matter pass without attention, this is meant to be a good jolt along that line of activity. And the same goes for Andy Scarlett who is now, with our aid, compiling the credits for our Class in the Alumni Fund. Be sure to get your gifts in the mail before June 30. If you will anticipate that deadline, it will lift a real load from Andy's shoulders and mind.
We have had an announcement of the marriage last winter of Hap Hinman's granddaughter, Sally Foley, to Michael Lane, in Carmel, Calif.
ow let's pack and have the car greased for the Hanover trip!
