'40 Sets Total Giving Record
JULY 1965

Records are made to be broken and Class Giving totals are no exception. Rising to the challenge made last year by the Class of 1939, this year's 25th Reunion Class of 1940 put on an unusually effective final campaign to bring their total 25-year giving to the new record sum of $656,000 - proudly announced at 1940's 25th reunion banquet in Alumni Hall on Saturday, June 19.

Starting their drive in March 1963, 30 months before their reunion, with a foundation total of $422,000, consisting of Alumni Fund gifts, Capital Campaign contributions, parent gifts, and other donations to special areas since graduation, the class raised some $234,000 in the final two years to handsomely surpass their goal, originally set at $600,000. In so doing, they not only broke the previous total giving record of $565,000 set last year by 1939, but also established a new mark for contributions in the final year by making gifts and pledges totaling $154,000.

The campaign was directed by Co Chairmen Robert H. Lake and Hugh W. Schwarz, with able assistance from Class Chairman J. Malcolm DeSieyes and a dedicated team of 12 area chairmen and almost 100 agents.

No better salute to the class and its leaders can be found than that expressed in the resolution passed on June 18 by the Dartmouth Alumni Council which "heartily congratulated" the class and pointed out that the leaders and the entire class membership "have earned the grateful thanks of the Alumni Council and the College for this magnificent achievement."
