Dr. John P. Bowler '15, former Dean (1927-1945) of the Medical School and a founder and long-time director of the Hitchcock Clinic, will serve as Special Assistant to the Medical School Dean for Regional Center Planning.

Dr. Bowler will undertake studies and counsel on the feasibility, implications, and advisability of establishing a Regional Center for Heart-Stroke-Cancer as part of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

The establishing of regional centers for an all-out attack on the three diseases was recommended by a commission appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to "develop a realistic battle plan leading to the ultimate conquest of three diseases - heart disease, cancer, and stroke - which now account for more than 70 percent of the deaths in this country."

Dr. Bowler retired in 1960 as surgeon at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, as director of the Hitchcock Clinic, and as Professor of Surgery at the Dartmouth Medical School. After retiring he was elected to the New Hampshire General Court and in 1962 to the Governor's Council.
