The annual Boston Alumni Association dinner on February 1 was the occasion for the Alumni Council's honoring Alex JonathanMcFarland '30 (left) with its Dartmouth Alumni Award. In making the presentation, Wilbur W. Bullen '22 (right), chairman of the Council's awards committee and former president of the Boston Alumni Association, read the following citation:
Weaned from the Dakotan plains in 1926 you immigrated to New England, and have never since left, thereby reversing the well-known admonition about "going west." In your program of consistency you have been immersed in the law for 33 years - and with the same legal partnership in Boston. After achieving фBK at Dartmouth in 1930 you won your LL.B. at Harvard. You have followed the dictum of Dean Ezra Pound, expressed to your law class on opening day, which counseled that "a lawyer's love should be that of the law - and it should be his only love."
In your legal capacity you have been, and are, a director of innumerable corporations, and a member of the Boston and Massachusetts Bar Associations.
Your avocations have included trusteeships at Hebron Academy and the Massachusetts Memorial Hospitals. For several years you devoted valuable time to the Boy Scout movement. You are a former vestryman of Trinity Church of Newton Center. Your club affiliations have been with the Commercial Club of Boston, the Merchants Club - and sportswise with the Weston Golf Club and the Skating Club of Boston. You spend your vacations at Lake Fairlee which you term to be "the garden spot of the country."
You have said that your family, Dartmouth, and the Class of 1930 (in that order) have provided the principal diversions from the demands of your professional life, and that the more active you have been in Dartmouth affairs the greater has been your sense of satisfaction. This felicity must be infinite since these "diversions" have included Class Agent (1941-1946), presidency of the Class Agents Associa- tion (1944-1945), Class Secretary (1946-1955), Alumni Council member (1942-1945), and President of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Boston (1953-1954). Presently you are Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Hanover Inn and chairman of the Inn Building Committee.
It is for this record of devotion to your College that we honor you with the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
