"It is a game, and it ought to be fun," Teevens says of his favorite sport. "I don't want to make it drudgery for the fans or the players." He has brought from Maine a complex arsenal of tactics to make the Big Green both more interesting to watch and tougher to attack or defend against. Three of Dartmouth's new assistant coaches—Brud Bicknell, Mike Hutchins and Steve Robichaud come from Maine and have helped to teach the strategy.

As Teevens diagrams it, his ideal team is one that follows the thinking man's approach that coaches began favoring during the early '70s. The object is to create as much confusion for the opposing team as possible, forcing errors. Multiple sets and formations are designed to keep opponents guessing until after the ball has been snapped.

At Boston University and Maine, Teevens favored a wide-open passing game; at both schools, passing records were broken repeatedly. The Dartmouth attack is likely to be similar, but the coach insists on molding his strategy to the predominant skills

of his players. Dartmouth did well with its passing game last year, but All-Ivy quarterback David Gabianelli '87 has departed. Teevens may end up using an option-rollout type of quarterback with an emphasis on running if the best candidate excels at these skills.

Also look for Teevens to employ greater depth in the offensive game. The Gabianelli-to-Craig-Morton Express was successful last year, but the new coach will try to add more facets to the Big Green game.

On defense, the key word is "blitz"—a word Teevens hated as an undergraduate quarterback. This year's team is likely to have people up front who can turn up the heat, along with defensive backs capable of handling the extra coverage.

Another Teevens trademark is frequent substitution, a technique that will require new depth. Finally, fans can expect to see a trick play or two almost every week, according to the rookie coach. Teevens won't be the sole author. So-called "alumni plays," culled from successes of the past, will dot the agenda. —F.C.
