As this is written, the Indian track team has one meet under its belt, a 64-45 loss to Cornell at Ithaca. Despite the losing score, the Green's middle-distance ace, Tom Holzel, took the spotlight with a first in the high jump, a second in the 600-yard run, and a first as anchor man for the winning one-mile relay team.
The Indians showed their expected weakness in the distance events as the Big Red captured first and second places in the mile and two-mile, plus a first in the 1,000-yard run and the two-mile relay. This, coupled with the absence of injured Sandy Duncan, record-holder in the hurdles, placed the Indians at serious disadvantage. The Cornellians took one-two in the hurdles.
Despite their inability to make the score close, the Indians did find the opportunity to cheer at several results. In addition to Holzel's fine showing, sprinter Gerry Ashworth indicated he was back in form. In his first race since pulling a leg muscle last spring, Ashworth was victorious in the 60-yard dash, with a time of 6.4 seconds. The Haverhill, Mass., sprinter is current holder of Dartmouth indoor records for both the 50-yard dash (5.3) and the 60 (6.1).
Also in a losing cause Hank Jenckes won the weight throw, while his teammate Bob Cahners was second. In other field events, Gary Foote gained a first in the broad jump with a leap of 21 feet and 1% inches.
