APRIL 1966

The U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity has awarded a $1,500,000 grant to the Independent Schools Talent Search Program, head-quartered on the Dartmouth campus.

The funds will provide scholarships for 300 academically promising ninth and tenth grade students from disadvantaged backgrounds. An additional 100 students will receive financial support provided by the scholarship resources of the participating patingindependent schools.

The students receive eight weeks of intensive tutoring in mathematics and English in the ABC (A Better Chance) Program and most then go on to the independent schools to continue preparation for college studies. In addition to Dartmouth, the originator of the ABC Program in 1964, and Mt. Holyoke College, which adopted a similar program for girls last year, three more colleges — Carleton College, Williams College, and Duke University — will have ABC programs this summer to teach the increased number for whom scholarships are provided under the new Office of Economic Opportunity grant.
