By now I must assume that you have all sent checks to Unc Richardson covering your Class Tax for the 25th Reunion next month and that you are busily making final preparations to get to Hanover on June 16. Time is running short if you haven't taken care of these things so get on the ball! And remember, if you arrive on Thursday, you get one night's rent free - the college picks up the tab for the night of the 16th. As you know we'll have a fine location along Tuck Mall in Gile, Streeter, Lord, Hitchcock, Russell Sage, and Butterfield. The Class Tent will be located in that area (exact location being selected by Snuffy Smith) and that's the starting point for all activities. At the moment we are fast approaching the 800 mark for attendance so don't miss the fun. Be in Hanover next month!
In last month's issue when talking about Army, Air Force, and Navy personnel who might be attending the Reunion, I failed to mention Dick Jachens who is in the odd position of being an Army officer in Norfolk, Va. Dick says that the duty at SACLANT is great and getting to know the officers and wives from other NATO countries is a wonderful experience. Dick had three trips to London and Paris in 1965. Last June, his wife, Ginny, went with him and they had a second honeymoon seeing the sights between NATO meetings. "Pans was great (you can't beat a moonlight boat ride on the Seine) but we enjoyed the countryside of England and the peaceful city of the Hague even more. Am going to George Washington University at night for graduate courses in Business Administration. Will try to make the 25th but my June trip to Europe may conflict." My advice is get your trip to Europe to follow the 25th - after all a night at Storr's Pond sure beats the Bateaux Mouches.
Some months ago I reported that BobHarvey's son Mike was a member of the fantastic Dartmouth freshman swimming team that beat the Yale frosh for the first time since 1928. What I did not mention was that Pete Jacobsen's son David, is a member of the same team — proving once again that '41 will not be submerged! We heard that the team shaved their heads prior to the meet and swam faster than ever before Pete Jacobsen is in charge of exploration for International Petroleuna Corp., a division of Standard Oil of N. J. He is presently working on development of oil in various central and South American countries. Following one year m Tulsa and ten in Venezuela with Creole Petroleum, the Jacobsens have recently moved to a spot just 15 miles south of Coral Gables. Sounds
While on the subject of Florida, there was a story out of Palm Beach during the winter which was of great interest to many old basketball fans and Dartmouth alumni. Twenty-five years ago Gus Broberg was named to the All-American basketball team for the third year in succession and most followers of Big Green basketball rated him in a class by himself. Now, m Palm Beach, where Gus is a successful lawyer and city court judge, his 15-year-old son is following in his father's athletic footsteps. He attracted attention as a high school quarter- back in the city play-offs last fall and last summer hurled the Palm Beach Babe Ruth League entry into the finals of the state tournament. He had ten shutouts including five no-hitters during the baseball season. In basketball he was picked for one of the Basketball Player of the Week Awards and had a 17.2 scoring average. Sounds like old times!
When the Dartmouth Glee Club appeared at Michigan Shore Club in Wilmette, Ill., in March, Stacy Hill and Lew Johnstone were on hand to represent 1941 along with Betsy and Downy Gray who recently moved from New Orleans to Winnetka. Bob latt sent me a clipping from the Springfield Union about still another member of the upper military echelons, Brig. Gen. BohDixon. Bob is commander of the 45th Air Division at Loring AFB, Maine, and was making the graduation speech at the Eighth Air Force NCO Academy graduation exer- cises. Bob was a Royal Canadian Air Force Officer during World War II. After the war he served as chief of officer assignments and deputy chief of personnel programming with SAC headquarters. He was the commander of a fighter unit in Korea during that Conflict.
A San Diego publication calls Wes Hadden a "yachtsman turned innkeeper." The article reads as follows: "Six-foot-five Wes Hadden of Rancho Sante Fe Inn was a formidable crew when he sailed on the famous ocean racer, "Serena," in the Ensenada Races. His sailing career started on the east coast with small sloops, dyer dinks, and snowbirds. During his Dartmouth College days, he crewed in the summer on yachts, alternated his sailing with winter skiing. While living in Coronado, he taught sailing and navigation. Now manager of Sancho Sante Fe Inn, Wes, with his wife and their six children, is not only landlocked in picturesque acreage, but has become an ardent horse enthusiast - the riding crop for the tiller." And, as Bruce Friedlich reported after a recent visit to the Coast, Wes's Inn is quite a spot!
Don Brown, senior vice president of Schroder Bank, makes the news again as trustee of the West Side Savings Bank. BobBarr is president of Barr &Barr, Inc., builders with headquarters in New York City. Bob and his wife Irene live in Riverside, Conn., and have a daughter at the University of Rochester and a son at the Brunswick School. Bob's activities include being a trustee of Brooklyn Hospital, New England Medical Center Hospital in Boston, and the New York School for Deaf in White Plains. He is also trustee and treasurer of the Gould Academy, Bethel, Me., and overseer, Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth!
Thats all for the merry month of May and before you see another column from this reporter the chances are you'll see him first - at the 25th Reunion. Come early and stay late. As my 15-year-old daughter says "We're gonna have a blast."
