For the first time in quite awhile I've got some news from Los Angeles (and it didn't come from "Dragnet" either); two clippings from the Los Angeles Times, a month apart, and they both concern Wes Hadden. The Thanksgiving-Day paper carried a photo of Wes' family (wife, two boys and two girls) at the dinner table with Wes doing a carving job on the turkey. The issue of December 81, carries the story of a fire at the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena where the Michigan State football team was staying prior to playing in the Rose Bowl. It seems that Wes' father-in-law is the owner of the hotel and Wes played a prominent part in fighting back the flames which threatened to engulf the hotel. Fortunately, there were no persons injured. The score of the Rose Bowl game was verification of the fact that the Michigan State footballers were unaffected by the blaze.
A letter from the College informs me that alumni in Texas have recently held a highly successful Southwestern Regional Conference in Dallas. Dave Norris (Dallas), Che I Williams (Denton), and Ernie Hamilton (San Antonio) helped put it over. The College reports that these men have done much to help make Dartmouth an even stronger national college. We are mighty proud that whenever alumni groups meet throughout the country, '41 does its part. This has been the case time and again in bulletins received by your secretary.
Additional names in the news this month include Dick Wheeler, Dick Potter, and SolLifton. Dick Wheeler of Hudson, N. Y., has been named as general manager of a new television station to open soon at Troy. Dick was formerly general sales manager of station WTOP in Washington, D. C., and will direct station WTRI-TV which will go on the air early this year. Dick Potter has joined the New York sales organization of The Alden Mills. Dick has been in the yarn business for the past three years and was formerly connected with the hosiery firm of Potter and Chadwick. Major Sol Lifton USAF(MC) has been awarded the Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant, for meritorious service during May 15 to November 30, 1952, as command surgeon to the Commander of Joint Task Force 132, which conducted nuclear tests in connection with the Atomic Energy Commission at the Eniwetok Proving Grounds.
So much for the news clips and now for the mailbag. We're glad to hear from LouYoung, former football star and now a golfer of wide renown. Lou resides in his native Pennsylvania at Devon. The Youngs and the Hugh Kenworthys are keeping pace with each other in producing members of the next generation. Hugh's family includes four boys, Lou's includes three boys and a girl. Well that sounds encouraging for Dartmouth football, vintage 1965-1972. Lou says when the eight kids get together it's rougher than the Harvard game.
From New Canaan, Conn., to New York City's office of the Cecil & Presby advertising agency is the daily commuting chore of WinWatson. Win likes it up in New Canaan but says his house was designed by an architect from Yale. Another resident of New Canaan is Rich Fisher who spends much time in Cuba and Puerto Rico buying cigar tobacco. Lance Ballou lives in nearby Ridgefield. The grapevine reports that Win is now a V.P. and account supervisor at his shop.
Robbins Barstow in continuing his work as director of field service for the Connecticut Education Association, state professional organization for educators with 12,000 members. He and his family (three children) live south of Hartford in Wethersfield. Skipping out West again to Colorado Springs we find that one of the residents is Mort McGinley who proudly announces the birth of his son, Thomas, on August 12.
Bill Freeman has moved from Chicago to Summit, N. J., and works downtown in New York City for Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. He heard recently from his old roommate, Ed Lamer, for the first time in ten years, Seems that Ed is living in Lexington. Ky., and working for March and McLennan, insurance brokers. Bruce Brown is living in Berkeley, Calif., and another resident of the town is Waring Carrington, a transplanted New Jerseyite. Brother, with this winter wind blowing and the snow flying around today, I'd like to be out there visiting with you gents.
My old buddie, Jupe Lewis, and his wife were recent visitors to Hanover, as were Mr.and Mrs. Soupy Campbell. I guess Soup heard about that artificial ice they have in Hanover this year and had to go down from Quebec and give it a whirl.
