This may well be the briefest column I've had the dubious distinction of writing due to dearth of news for the issue. I appreciate the fact that more than likely everyone refrained from sending in news so that I might not have to toil over the typewriter during the balmy weather. Actually the job is much easier when I have lots of items to report. Please don't do me any more such favors in the future.
Fortunately what little news we do have is most important. Dave Gleason has been named president of the Austin Powder Company of Cleveland, Ohio, a major supplier of explosives and chemicals for the construction and mining industries. Ned May, who informed us of Dave's promotion, wants us eastern folk to be advised that the next time we drive out West, we'll be driving through mountains blasted by Austin. Sounds like Ned should have been a P R man rather than an engineer.
Another big promotion was announced in New York City where Tom Sayles was advanced to vice-president by the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company and placed in charge of its branch in the Time-Life Building. Holder of an M.B.A. degree from the New York University School of Business Administration, Tom was previously an assistant V.P. with Manufacturers Hanover in charge of the Class of 1954 dues account.
Barry Nova spent several months in the advertising field immediately after graduation before donning Air Force blue for two years and obviously enjoyed that first bite. He came back from military duty to join the Friend-Reiss agency in 1956 and after two years decided to switch (rather than fight?) to Lennen & Newell. Last year Barry was named an L & N vice president, and last month he was promoted to account supervisor of one of the agency's choicest accounts, the Consolidated Cigar Corporation. He has been handling Muriel Cigars for Consolidated since 1962.
Word comes from up in the north country that Pete Robinson has been stomping the lecture circuit under the auspices of the American Geological Society. Among the places that Pete spoke at recently were the University of Maine and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Pete is a professor of geology at the University of Massachusetts, specializing in the fields of pe trology and structural geology. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard and has done an extensive amount of research in western Massachusetts.
Don't let anyone tell you hard work doesn't pay off. Take Bob Collimore, for example. His efforts as a representative of the Chicago general agency of National Life Insurance Company of Vermont earned him membership in the firm's tenth President's Club—and that in turn made him eligible to attend the club's March conference at the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach Bob began his affiliation with the Chicago agency of Kuffel, Eggert, & Co., in 1964 after ten years as a jet pilot in the Air Force. He's obviously accustomed to flying high.
So much for this month's news. Ordinarily the column would end here; however, since there is considerable space left, I would like to use it to give recognition to some of our classmates who have distinguished themselves in alumni affairs. We may not be long on news contributors but we do have a considerable number of alumni club presidents and secretaries. The most recent member of the former is Bo Martin who was just elected head of the Dartmouth Club of Detroit. A fellow Michigan Law School alumnus, Joe Gruel, of East Grand Rapids, heads the Western Michigan Dartmouth Alumni Association. Pennsylvania is the only other state which can boast of two '54 alumni club prexies, Doug Hoskins of the Central Pennsylvania Club and Tom Malcolm of the Philadelphia group. In two of our most popular seaside resorts the helm of the local alumni clubs is firmly held by KyLewis and Walt Dingwall. Ky is president of the San Diego, Calif., Association and Walt heads the Florida Gold Coast Club, which includes Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. Incidentally, neither Ky nor Walt are professional helmsmen. Both are attorneys. Only one classmate is president of a statewide alumni group and he is Joe Poorman of the Dartmouth Club of Delaware. As Joe says, it may be a small state, but there are those of us who. . . . There's probably no one who can better get down to grass roots in alumni affairs than Dick Grassey, leader of the Bergen County (N. J.) "machine." PhilChristophe is a big man up the river, the Charles that is. He heads the Charles River Dartmouth Club, which includes Wellesley, Needham, Mass., and vicinity. We have an overseas alumni club president even if the "sea" is the Great Lakes. Ed Scott heads the Dartmouth College Club of Ontario.
Now a brief tribute to that overworked, devoted and noble officer, the secretary. Our man where the balmy breezes blow is JackMullen of the Dartmouth Club of Hawaii and our man where the not so balmy breezes blow is Skip Grinton of the Chicago Alumni Association. Also representing the Class in the Midwest is Bill Petty, secretary of the Cincinnati Association. Bill Madden is the Monmouth County (N. J.) Club's quill bearer. A bird of like feather is Dr. LyonGreenberg of the Alumni Association of Northeastern New York. In the Bay State we have two busy secretaries, Dick Lewis of the Charles River Club and Charlie Morrison of the Tuck School Association of Boston.
Members of the National Enrollment Committee are Bob Adnopoz (Southern Connecticut), Kev Sullivan (Western New York), Bud Kingsley (Northern Ohio), NedHoban (Southern Michigan), Pete Barker (Eastern Oklahoma), Pete Johnson (Southern Idaho), Tommy Thompson (Greater Santa Barbara, California).
That's all for now. It's time for this noble bird to stow away his quills and to,break out his webbed flippers and water wings. I expect that after spending another relaxing summer in Westport, Conn., I shall be fully and raring to rip into the column m the fall! so please don't hold back the news from me again.
Frederick H. Heerde '66 (c) of Benton,Ky., is the first recipient of a trophy donated by Donald C. Goss '53 (1) to honorhis former roommate Lawrence Conover'53. Conover, once Commodore of theCorinthian Yacht Club, was lost at seaeight years ago. Heerde is an outstandingmember of this year's club.
