By this time the excitement and furor of the presidential election and football season have died out, only to be replaced by the excitement and furor of dashing about for last minute Christmas shopping. We saw colorful electoral and gridiron campaigns this fall. With all the debates and non-debates on television, my candidate for the most enjoyable viewing was the Harvard game, which many of us in the East were able to see on TV at home.
There were a good number of '54's in attendance at the various Dartmouth games this fall. Among those in Hanover for the Princeton game and for cocktails afterwards at the D.O.C. House were the John Hestons, Dave McLaughlins, Dick Trowbridges, Hugh Nolins, John Popes, Bob Kenneys, Mort Galpers, Bill Bonnevilles and Bruce McAllisters.
The day of the Yale game was bright and warm, but unfortunately the result of the game was not. However, it was a good occasion to renew suntans and acquaintanceships with classmates. Many of us were present at the game and I will take the liberty of omitting the names of those persons previously mentioned in this and prior columns. Spotted in the stands were Dave Grogan, Bill Rex, Rudy Thielscher, Jim Fisher, George McLaughlin, John Gillespie, Pete Kenyon, Ralph Destino, Ed Winnick, George Graboys, Wayne Weil and Don Berlin.
Appropriately enough at this festive time of the year, there are a good many glad tidings to report. Dr. Bob Riggio has become engaged to Dr. Maureen Anne Relland of Port Jefferson, N. Y. Bob is completing his residency in internal medicine at New York's Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals. Maureen is interning at St. Vincent's Hospital. The wedding is planned for next month.
Jay Engel was married in August to Diane Ferguson in Riverside, Calif. Diane has two B.A.'s to her credit. One in religion from Oberlin and the other in music from Redlands. After a California wedding and Switzerland honeymoon, the Engels have decided to settle down in Southboro, Mass., where Jay teaches at St. Mark's School.
There are going to be a lot of stockings hanging up in Jon Moore's house even when it isn't Christmas. Jon and Kate recently added a third daughter, Jocelyn, to their family. Bill and Beryl Pierce also welcomed a third child, Hilary Ann. into their Chevy Chase household. Pete Bullis, a partner in the Cambridge (Mass.) firm of William A. Halsey, Architects & Planners, may soon have to design larger quarters for himself and wife, Patricia, with the recent arrival of son, Peter, their second child. Lon and Marianne Chaikin, now residing in Port Washington, N. Y., report the birth of their first, Karl Michael, on September 24 of this year.
From piggy banks we turn to the Chase Manhattan Bank, which recently announced the promotion of Neal Farrell to vice president. Neal, who now becomes the youngest VP of the nation's third largest bank, is in the metropolitan New York department of the Chase. Another rising banker is NeilHendry, who has been promoted to vice president in charge of the North Adams (Mass.) office of the First Agricultural National Bank. Prior to joining the First Agricultural last year, Neil served as a loan officer at the State Street Bank and Trust Co. of Boston.
In the world of promotions Ken Patterson certainly must take the prize for acquiring the longest new title. Ken has been appointed sales manager of signs and displays in the Lamp Sales Department of Corning Glass Works. If you need further enlightenment, this department is part of the company's Lamp Products Division which markets glass envelopes and components for light bulbs and tubes and automobile headlights. Ken and Jane live in Big Flats, N. Y., and should be having a second addition to their family at about the time this MAGAZINE hits the mails.
A new addition to the family of harried New York City commuters is John Gillespie. Formerly resident manager of the Ambassador Hotels in Chicago, John has joined the N.Y.C. advertising agency of Needham & Grohmann, Inc. as an account executive in that firm's Hotel and Resort Division. John and wife Sandy now reside at 1111 Midland Road, Bronxville, N. Y., with their newly born daughter, Laura.
Also moving to New York, but further upstate, is Neil Citron. Having completed his tour of duty at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Chelsea, Mass., Neil has entered into a private practice in general surgery in Syracuse, N. Y.
From west of the Hudson River, East Orange, N. J., to be exact, comes word that Don Berlin has become a partner for the general practice of law in the firm of Williams, Willette & Berlin.
Bill White advises that there still are available copies of the 10th Reunion Edition of the 1954 Class Directory. Those of you who have lost or misplaced your copy should contact Bill, c/o James T. White & Company, 101 Fifth Avenue, New York, N. Y. 10003.
This has been a memorable year for our class. We have been out of, but not away from, Dartmouth for ten years now. We renewed acquaintanceships with each other and with the College at a tremendous reunion this June. This was the year in which the doctors and lawyers among us, after many arduous years of training, have started out in private practice for themselves. This too was the year which saw many of us take giant strides up the ladder of corporate and governmental success. Domestically, the ranks of our bachelors became further depleted and the number of our children increased substantially. 1964 seems to have been a good year for us. I hope and trust that this coming year will prove to be a healthy and prosperous one as well.
Season's greetings to all!
