Foronce, I actually have more news to report than space to report it. Happy days! Michael Beckerman, who is doing his radiology residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, and his wife, Hila (herself a pediatrician), had their first child—Jonathan Evan Beckerman —on July 12. The happy family had Jonathans bris at the Colleges Roth Center for Jewish Life.
Kate Gold was kind enough to drop us a line to let us know what she's been up to of late and what summer had in store: "I got a masters degree in secondary education, taught junior high French and reading this past year and got engaged to my boyfriend of four years. Jay (said boyfriend/fiance) completed his Ph.D. in meteorology and accepted a tenure track position at Lyndon State College in Vermont...and we eloped! 'Real' wedding to be staged somewhere in Vermont next year for the benefit of partying with family and friends who live all the heck over the place (saying 'heck' means I've been in Utah too long). Our trip east will take us past Denver, where we intend to drop in for breakfast with Kathryn Balink. She treated me to eardrum-piercing squeals of delight upon hearing about the whole marriage thing, so the least I can do is swerve 80 miles off course to bask in her enthusiasm. Coincidently, the move will bring me back within shouting distance of my Dartmouth roommate of all four years, Molly Heath. Molly is teaching high school in Windsor, Vermont, and will either be appalled or amused that I'm outing her location in the DAM. On a trip to scout out possible jobs for me up in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom last spring, I dropped in on Molly and was conned into, er, I mean, honored by the duty of judging the prom court at her school. Vaguely surreal. I'm writing this from Salt Lake City, in an apartment filled with boxes. On Monday (July 25) we'll be getting in our big yellow truck to drive cross country with all of our belongings, towing my car behind. I'm not sure if it will be fun, but it will surely classify as an 'experience.'
Continuing my good fortune, Liz Gerber sent in a newsy e-mail replete with classmate names: "Since I will not get a chance to go to a class reunion any time soon (I always seem to be graduating on reunion weekend—first in '03 and again in '08), I thought I would write to update folks as to what has been happening in my life since graduation. Upon graduating I ventured into management, toy design and teaching, trying out a little bit of everything. I have now lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for six years (five more years than I had planned) and completed a masters degree in product design at Stanford. It was a truly amazing experience—the kind of academic program I had been looking for since freshman year at Dartmouth. I am now in the third year of a doctoral program (also at Stanford) studying innovative teams and organizations. The most exciting news of all is that I am getting married to an amazing man named Nick Switanek (University of Arizona '99). We are getting married on Lake Champlain in Vermont, where I grew up, and couldn't be more excited. Elizabeth McGoldrick will be in my wedding party. Lots of other '98s will be in attendance, including Brad Molyneaux, Lindsay Page, Dune Thome, Neville McCaughren, Laura Turner (now Hayden—she married an amazing man named Brian Hayden in May), Eric Daly, Mike Carey, Jamie Shandro, Brian Sheldon (who just got engaged himself). Other alums include Jim Hourdequin '97, Hans Kieserman '97, Rosi Kerr '97 and Neelu Jain '99."
