This will be the last set of notes before the summer break, so I'll fill you all in on everything that I've heard from various '65 sources. Incidentally, I want to thank all of you who wrote over the course of the year — it really kept this column alive. I hope to hear from a lot more of you over the summer and next year.
Steve Waterhouse wrote from Tuck School that he has become engaged to Miss Linda Lenge (Simmons '66), whom Steve described as "a very successful Harvard Weekend blind date." It looks like a September wedding, but plans are indefinite. Steve also mentioned that Chuck Coe, who left Dartmouth in 1962 for a two-year hitch in the service and then returned to the Big Green last year, has been elected president of Sig Ep for the coming year. Chuck is also very active with the ruggers.
Ensign Marc Efron wrote from Boston where his ship, the "U.S.S. Wasp," is homeported. Marc is a communications officer aboard the Wasp, and has spent his Navy career roaming the Atlantic and the Caribbean picking up astronauts. According to Marc there's a strong contingent of '65's in the Beantown area, and he runs into many of them frequently, including Chuck Terry, who is at Harvard Law and is chairman of the Harvard Law Forum, and Neil Grossman, who, according to Marc, began the year studying economics at Brown, but decided to leave when he discovered the inadequacy of their football team. Neil is now a sales representative for the Old Colony Packing Company in Boston. Marc also included the news that Jerry Putnam and Larry "Muldoon" Goldberger are attempting to innovate the Dartmouth spirit of "hanging loose" at Tufts Med. In fact they plan to room together next year so that they can more efficiently combine their punting talents.
Paul Pringle wrote from Michigan Law that, alas, his string of big weekends at Dartmouth has come to an end. He had finals over Green Key and then had to shove off for his summer job at Harrah's Club in Lake Tahoe, Nev. Things could be worse I suppose.
Word comes from Pete "K-Bear" Holmes and his wife Jane that a bear cub was born to them on Oct. 4, 1965 - Peter Jordan Holmes Jr. '88. Pete is working toward his Master's in social studies education at Syracuse University, and practice teaches junior and senior American history and advance placement history.
My last trip to Hanover was in early April, just as another mischievous and memorable spring term was beginning, and I did manage to pick up some class news in between beers and waterfights.
I ran into Jim Westfall, who has just completed his junior year in March after a twoyear tour of duty with the Air Force. Remembering his first two years on the Hanover scene, Jim very wisely returned with some company - a wife and a child.
If you walk down Main Street in Hanover now, and from force of habit turn into the third doorway after "Walt and Ernie's alley" you arrive at the Village Green — not the Beefeater. Rod Meade and I made the same mistake and that's where we ran into each other. Rod had been working in the New York City area, but he had to give up all the glamor of the city when he reported to Navy OCS in early May.
Ted Atkinson is finishing up his first year at Tuck School in fine style and will be working for Morgan Guaranty in NYC this summer. Ted whispered in my ear that DavePerinchief is at the head of his class at mortician school. I guess he's really knockin' them dead down there.
I also had occasion to get together with John Raney over a few beers at the Beta house bar. John is staying quite active with the rugby team while he's at Tuck School, and he hopes to start law school in the fall.
I received a fine letter from Tuck Mays recently. Tuck is aboard the "U.S.S. Skagit," now off the coast of Vietnam, running rines and supplies to various coastal strone holds. Tuck expects to be back to the West Coast in early May, and he will fly home for two weeks' leave in July.
Wedding and engagement notices continue to pour in. On Saturday, March 5 2nd Lt Ed Taber was married to Miss Carol Anderson (Green Mountain '65) in Ridgewood N. J. Ed is at Quantico, Va., with the Us Marine Corps. On March 26 Pete Bupret and Miss Nancy Thompson tied the knot Pete and Nancy hit Paris, Rome, and London for their honeymoon yet, and are now back in Boston where Pete is an operations representative for Pan Am.
The schedule of summer activity gets heavier and heavier. July is the month for Mike Phillips and Miss Julia Miller (Mt Holyoke '65). Mike is attending NYU Law School and Julia is with the McCall Corn in New York.
Richard Voss' engagement to Miss Elizabeth Ann Marks has been announced by her parents. A summer wedding is planned after Dick graduates from Dartmouth, and Elizabeth from Wheelock in June. Jin, Chandler has become engaged to Miss Ann Hawthorne, and the couple plans an August wedding in Colorado Springs, Colo., Ann's hometown. Ann is a Mt. Holyoke graduate and works for the Houghton Mifflin Co. in Boston. Jim will graduate from UMass this June, and will enter McGill University Med School in the fall. Pete Breitling and Miss Nancy Evans have had their engagement announced. Nancy is a graduate of Centenary College for Women. Breits is at Penn Law School. Finally, Jim Hartmann wrote to tell me of his engagement to Miss Mary Richards (Univ. of lowa '66). Jim is at the University of Minnesota doing graduate work in psychology. The wedding is set for June
That's all the news that's really fit to print. By now I hope all of you have contributed to the Alumni Fund so that we can have 100% participation to be proud of. If you haven't get it up during these last few weeks of the campaign — you all know what a worthwhile effort you're contributing to - think how much it's contributed to us. Incidentally, I don't know if it's because the Head Agent's job was too tough for him, but Larry Duffy is headed for Navy OCS in October.
Have a good summer and keep in touch!
