Hello again! Believe it or not we've completed another full swing on the alumni trail, and this will be the last column until October. I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to write during the past nine months, so that I could keep the column alive and up-to-date... this includes parents, wives, and friends who bothered to write to me concerning their favorite '65. It's all sincerely appreciated.
Bill Park and Miss Judy Fouke (Duke School of Nursing '67) in Dayton, Ohio, on June 10. Bill has just completed his third year at Duke Med.
Also on June 10, Walt Lacey will marry Miss Beverly Burwell (Smith '67). Walt had interrupted his Dartmouth studies temporarily to work on research vessels out of Woods Hole (Cape Cod) Oceanographic Institution, but he has returned to' Hanover and will graduate in June. Bev's and Walt's dads were classmates at Harvard, a family scar which I hope the newlyweds can overcome.
July 22 will be the date for Tom Fletchner and Miss Valerie Raabe (Univ. of Cincinnati '66). Both are students at the University of Wisconsin, where Tom is working on a Ph.D. in chemistry, and Val will receive her M.A. in June on the way to her Ph.D. in medical microbiology. They will be married in Valerie's hometown of Cincinnati.
Lee Curtis and Miss Cheryl Johnson have settled on July 8 as their date. Cheryl will graduate from Smith in June, and Lee is finishing up his second year at Washington University Law School in St. Louis.
On the way back from the altar, having already taken the marital plunge, we have: Bobby O'Brien and Miss Anne-Marie Foley, who were married in Southbridge, Mass., on 28. Anne-Marie will graduate in June from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee, Mass. Bob is an industrial engineer with the Norton Company in Worcester.
Andy Rowles and Miss Barbara Sorenson have also become man and wife. Barbara studied at Northwestern and Columbia, as well as attending college in Munich. Andy had interrupted college for a two-year stint with the Army Special Forces, and he will graduate from Dartmouth this June. Both Barb and Andy hope for a Peace Corps assignment after his graduation.
Mike Bettman and Miss Ellen Hofheimer were married on March 18 in White Plains, N. Y. Ellen is a Conn College grad, and is currently teaching in N.Y.C. Mike has just finished his second year at Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Sandy Ritter and Miss Linda (Daisy) Johnson tied the knot on March 4 in LaCota, N. Dak. Ritts is at the University of Minnesota School of Architecture, and his spring quarter program called for him to be in Rome ... so they are really only having a run-of-the-mill honeymoon.
My final fatality for the school year is Bob Murphy, who married Miss Donna Duguid on April 1. Donna is a Simmons grad, and has been working in Schenectady, N. Y., her hometown, as a physical therapist. Murph graduates from Columbia Business School in June. Walt Harrison and JimDanielson were ushers.
Less romantic news follows: Tim Cockcroft is a Peace Corps volunteer, and he has been in Malaysia as a vocational education teacher since late January. Tim took his training at California State College at Los Angeles. Previous to enrolling in the Peace Corps, Tim had spent a year at law school at Loyola of Los Angeles.
My apologies to Ed Holmes for not having included this next bit of news sooner, for he notified me of it months ago, and I must have misplaced the note. After graduation Ed spent some time with the U.S. Public Health Service in Philadelphia, and then threw his lot in with Uncle Sam. He graduated from Army OCS at Fort Sill, Okla., last December, went to Fort Irwin, Calif., and expected to be shipped out to you-know-where within six months of the time he arrived on the West Coast.... A Dartmouth club of Saigon becomes more of a possibility every day.
Mike Mascari and his wife, the former Rosemary Barrett of Terre Haute, Ind., have finished a year of VISTA work in Cleveland, and are now continuing their studies in the Cleveland area. Mike attends Western Reserve University's school of applied social science, and is also involved in doing volunteer social work. Rosemary also attends school regularly, as well as taking care of their six-month-old son, Paul. Mike and Rosemary met and were married during their VISTA service.
John Wakefield is one of eight Reynolds Scholarship winners this year. Reynolds are awarded by Dartmouth to seniors and recent alums for a year's study abroad. John will use his to study political science at the London School of Economics.
Dave Wagner writes from aboard the "USS Fulton," out of New London, Conn., that he has "signed a guaranteed four-year, no trade, no cut contract" with the Navy. Wags spent three months in the Caribbean recently where he bumped into Joel Eiserman. Jerry Armstrong, and Don Miller, all naval officers, and they arranged for informal Dartmouth Club meetings on alternate Thursdays at El Riviera Club and Little America. Sounds like a pretty rough tour of duty.
Gary and Marsha Wilson write that they will be back in the east for the summer months. The possies on a little Wilson in late June are very strong. Gary will spend the summer working for a New England architectural firm, and he and Marsh will be located somewhere in the Killington-Wood-stock area.
This is the last time I will be writing to you as a bachelor, so if my verse seems more strained and cynical next year you'll be understanding I hope. On July 1 I go down for the count, and on July 15 Linda and I will take up residence in Exeter, N. H., where I have joined the admissions staff of the Phillips Exeter Academy. If you are ever in the area, please look us up.
We're on the last leg of our Alumni Drive too. As I write this in early May we're slightly ahead of our 1966 pace. If you haven't pitched in yet, do so today, and help boost our participation total. Dartmouth needs our support; let's not be reluctant to her call!
