It was one of the greater days in Cleveland Alumni Association history. Professor John G. Kemeny, chairman of the mathematics department, captivated three separate audiences with his provocative, stimulating and fascinating comments and predictions on the computer, present tense and future.
John Moore '40 and Martin King '38 organized the noon luncheon for over 200 businessmen from greater Cleveland. Assisting in the elaborate planning for this function were Lee Chilcote '30, Richard Jackson'33, and William Steck '31.
In mid-afternoon 250 math students, teachers, and guidance counselors listened to Professor Kemeny discuss the impact of the computer on college academic life, the undergraduates' ingenuity in developing and planning the time-sharing program and the exposure all freshmen receive from the new multi-million computer. Arrangements for this session were made by Frank Treadway'50 and Tom McCreevey '55.
Eloquent and humorous, he delighted Dartmouth alumni and wives who attended the annual banquet with his anecdotes, experiences, and predictions of the computer of the future in relationship to the household. The dinner was planned by Andy Carstensen '45 and Warren Crumbine '37.
George Kingsley Jr. '54 was elected president of our Association. Outgoing president John Klein '52 was presented a picture of the Hopkins Center in appreciation for his outstanding contributions in time and effort given our club during the past year. Other officers elected were as follows: Vice Presidents - Richard Jackson '33 and Robert Palmer '34; treasurer, Frank Treadway '50; assistant treasurer, Robert Gudbranson '55; secretary, Ed Oberndorf '52; assistant secretary, Richard Stoddart '58. Tom McCreevey'55 was appointed Cleveland Enrollment Chairman.
On July 15 the Club held its annual co-ed picnic at Pine Lake Trout Club. The cochairmen, Peter Danford '58 and ChuckWinslow '59 planned everything but the weather. In spite of the elements Tom McCreevey '55 and Warren Crumbine '37 led the baseballers - the girls won (natch!). Later Dick Jackson '33 led our "Injunaires" in an inspiring concert.
