Hail, noble '72s, far and wide! Op one of those rare, halcyon days of summer (at least the way the weather has been treating us so far) your humble scribe sends you glad tidings from the verdant Hanover plain!
Another crop of alumni has joined our ranks, among them the offspring of some of our brethren. I had the opportunity to chat with Dimitri Papadopoulos at Class Day as his son Tony prepared to bid Dartmouth farewell. Dimitri sends his best to all from South Carolina, and hinted strongly he will be joining us next June for our 35th. I looked for Mike Hufft, proud parent of graduating Kate, but couldn't locate him in the throng. And although I missed Shel Prentice, I had the rare but delightful opportunity to chat with the "Prentice Trifecta," as I have affectionately named his trio of daughters to attend our fair College—Hi- lary'01, Amanda '06 and Julie '09. What an affirmation of coeducation you gentlemen have sired!
In the world of politics, Bill Price has told me Stuart Simms (see more on him, page 60) is making a run for attorney general in the great state of Maryland. Stuart has amassed quite a history in Maryland. Sounds like a story I should be sharing with the class, Stuart—and best of luck in the election! Bill also shares his daughter Erika and her Newport High School Jazz Band were selected by Essentially Ellington as one of only 15 high school jazz bands from across the United States, Canada and overseas to compete in NewYork City on May 18-20. A notable achievement!
This column will reach you shortly after Shel and company gather "on Golden Pond" for another Minary mini-reunion. Our reporter-at-large John Rockwell will be in attendance and will file a story in the class newsletter. The focus of the mini is allegedly planning for our 35th reunion. I say allegedly, given the extraordinary beauty of Squam Lake and the Minary Center, and the need for our hardworking brothers to spend some time unwinding from life's tedium. I'm sure, though, some great ideas will come from this gathering.
This, of course, segues into a reminder to mark your calendars for Monday, June 11, through Thursday, June 14, 2007. John DeRegt, our reunion chair, is assembling a formidable team to make this another great gathering of the '72s in Hanover. From this point forward you will be hearing much to entice you to join us. For those who haven't had an opportunity to visit our Mother in a spell, aside from the wonderful opportunity to see old friends and to make new ones, the sheer beauty of our campus and the impressive changes that have taken place make a pretty strong case for a visit. Hard to believe it will have been 35 years since we marched up the front lawn of Baker ourselves, isn't it?
Until next we meet, I am yours faithfully in green.
