The morning is bright and the shadow you cast is bound to be long. .. . '42's, at home and in far away places, are casting "long shadows" as they continue to contribute significantly to this world of ours.
Paul B. "Bax" Lanius, Denver native and graduate of East High School, has been in the Foreign Service for seventeen years and is about to take up residence in a new area. Since 1950 he has lived and worked in Austria, Republic of South Africa, Italy, and East Pakistan. Now Bax and his wife and several of the five children will go to the U. S. Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados. (Secy's note: With Bax reporting that "Almost 6000 children a day are born in East Pakistan" it struck me that this must exceed substantially the birthrate of Parsippany, N. J. ... However the problems which stem from overpopulation all over this world should not be the subject of humor; they are far too serious.) Paul, we are in debt to you and your family for the many sacrifices in the national service over the years!
Luis J. Zalainea is slowly adapting to Miami (Fla.) and his new job as head of the South American Travel Organization (SATO). He writes, "Miami seems too quiet after the hectic pace at Bogota, but this year have spent most of my time on an airplane. Four trips to South America, including 'discovery tour' of Surinam, a fascinating place where the town square reminded me of the Dartmouth Common, in the tropics."
On October 12 Luis is leaving for Athens, Greece to attend the World Travel Congress, where he will be on a panel with the world's leading travel experts. . . .He still manages to find time for writing and is now finishing a "trilogy of novellas."
MEANWHILE BACK AT THE RANCH: Class treasurer Dick Burns scribbled a note on the dues notice to Jack Zimmer of Winter Park, Fla., asking Baseball Jack whether he could still "take two and hit to right?" Jack answered, ". . . Still play a little softball but watch my boy play that hardball. Tennis and golf are more my speed. If you ever get to Florida look us up." .. .We will, Jack, we will. .. maybe you'd rather run just one big open house for us '42's!
Dex and Genelle Richards took in the Holy Cross game, evidently sparked by the decisive win over UMass. They also plan to attend the Cornell game and informal reunion November 17-19. Dr. Stuart Finch made his presence felt at the Holy Cross game and is spending the month of November in Japan. Speaking of November 17-19, which will no doubt be anti-climactic in terms of the annual fall foliage festival, Armstrong"Stam" Stambaugh says he is coming. AdWinship is handling the accommodations.
Loyal New Englander Dick Burns, in passing along some of these messages, gave a big plug for those phenomenal Red Sox... and it must have done some good because they had the big inning in the crucial game when they really "stung" the ball against the Twins and won their first league pennant since 1946.
Harry Bartlett of West Hartford is still talking about the talked-about "25th" of the Great Class of '42. Harry, who visisted Han- over recently with son, Rich, for an admis- sions interview, is secretary and assistant treasurer of Rensselaer Polytechnic InstituteHartford Graduate Center and is engaged in organizing the raising of the remaining one- and-one-half million dollars in an eight million $ fund campaign for a new building in downtown Hartford. Colleges and universities and public schools are really involved with raising big money these days!
Speaking of $ we celebrated our 25th with a record year in the Alumni Fund. Our final total was $91,669, the highest total ever achieved by a Dartmouth class. No other class has ever gone over $70,000. WarrenKreter, Head Class Agent recently retired, has been the kingpin in the operation.
Newsletter Editor Milt Williams passed along a note and picture from Joe Tobin. Re-reuning at "Tobin's island" in August were Alex and Fran Hooker, Joe and JeanTobin, David and Joan Angell '51, and Boband Jan is Fisher.
... A note to recently-wed Jim Idema of Denver: We hope that you and Joyce live to celebrate your 50th . .. wedding anniversary, we mean!
The San Francisco Sunday Examiner's "The Bay at Your Feet" column describes and pictures the beautiful handcrafted furniture in oak and walnut wood done by cab- inetmaker Art Carpenter for the Mill Valley Public Library. . . . The massive board room table is also a museum-piece from the Espenet shop of Art Carpenter of Bolinas. Tree-lovers will be interested to know that this particular library, located in a redwood grove, was situated without the loss of a single redwood. (College trustees please note.)
Class members and other alumni may be interested in knowing how to answer a "man-on-the-street interview question on 'What do you think of the mini-skirt?'" Take a leaf from handsome Jack Tobin's book ... his photo and non-commital comments on the mini-skirt appeared in September's Women's Wear Daily. ... "I like them," he said, "but I think they are ideal for the young. I have never seen my wife in a mini, so I will reserve opinion." Jack is a product manager of Shulton, Inc.
