The American Institute of Management, which periodically issues a report entitled Manual of Excellent Managements, surveyed the presidents of 204 outstanding companies for this year's edition. One question raised was: What educational institution is the alma mater of the largest number of presidents of these best-man- aged companies?

Of the 204 presidents, 41 went to Harvard and gave that university first place by a wide margin. Northwestern was second with 15, Yale third with 13, and Dartmouth tied with Chicago and Michigan for fourth, with nine each. Then came Illinois with eight and Princeton and Stanford with seven each.

In a similar study in 1950 the Institute reported that 51 presidents of excellently managed companies had never attended college. This time the number of non-college presidents had shrunk to 13.
