Alumni initiative and one of the nation's leading coin firms have cooperated to make an important addition to Baker Library's numismatic collection. The gift was made by Stacks of New York and includes 140 standard works and a nearly complete run of The Numismatist plus a full set of The Numismatic Review, pub- lished by Coin Galleries, a Stacks division. It brings the Library's numismatic collection to some 300 volumes.
James C. Risk '37 was instrumental in arranging for Stacks' donation and himself contributed a number of volumes. Initial impetus for the enlarged collection came from J. Eric Engstrom '65, who as an undergraduate was student curator of the College Museum coin collection and author of "Coins in Shakespeare—A Numismatic Guide." He was provided by the Library with a list of its then current holdings and worked for some months compiling a further list of necessary additions.
These additions, as reported in the October 4 issue of Coin World, are "a carefully selected cross-section of modern and older numismatic references." They will play an important role in the increasing scope of numismatic activities at Dartmouth, supervised by Doran A. Jones, honorary curator, and will provide a solid base on which it is hoped other alumni will build.
