A freshman class of 827 men, second largest in Dartmouth's 198 years, is one reason for the enrollment jump this fall. The Class of 1971 has been assembled from 48 of the 50 states and from 15 foreign countries, counting only nativeborn students. The Middle Atlantic states are home for 29.6% of the freshman class, New England 27.9%, the Midwest 18.6%, the South 10%, and the Far West 8.8%.

The class has come 75.6% from public schools and 24.4% from independent schools. That no large school groups dominate the class is indicated by the 635 public and private schools represented by 827 freshmen.

In College Board scores, the men of '71 did not vary significantly from the men in the two preceding freshman classes. Their median score in mathematics was 698, compared with 690 last year and 705 two years ago; and their median verbal score was 650, compared with 650 and 654 for the two classes before them. Larger numbers, however, had scores above 750. There were 146 in math, compared with 135 and 134; and 55 in the verbal test, compared with 32 and 27.

The 158 alumni sons in the Class of 1971 compare with 154 last year and 143 two years ago.
