This is a beautiful day to start the New Year with over two feet of that clean, pure white cover of snow, all of which arrived Christmas Day and the following Thursday. The degree of enthusiasm which one has for the stuff depends on whether he is a skier or a shoveler or a just plain admirer of nature. As for the 19llers, none of them fit into the first category, but they can still admire the joy and skill of so many who are not so much younger. The various Dartmouth ski slopes are filled with them and more power and fun to them.
Meanwhile classmates may be interested in a resume of where 19llers may be found as they vacation in various spots about the country, so far as they are known. Actually most of us will be found enjoying our own homes like the Griswolds and the Burleighs who have foregone Florida for this season anyhow. Sarge and Esther Eaton will be at Sea Island, Ga., with their daughter and family for March. The Farrells will also be there. It is good news from Frances Keeler that Ed is much better and they plan to go to Florida in January, where they will again be at Hillsboro Shore Apartments, Pompano Beach. The Belleview Biltmore in Bellair, Fla., will be the home of Jack andDorothy Steeves for a month starting Feb. 8. Clyde and Madge Locke will be opening their Altamonte, Fla., home the first of January. They joined two bus loads of Dartmouth fans from Buffalo to go to the Cornell game. They were fascinated by Beard's passing game. Mary Chase is permanently settled in Osterville, Mass., but is spending part of the winter with her daughter and family in Pennsylvania. Troy Parker has tied up at the Mission Inn in Riverside, Calif., for the winter but will be back among his beloved Black Hills, come spring. Brad and Barbara Patten were seen in Boston during the Christmas vacation. Winter is beautiful in Michigan, but there is just too much of it. They may try Mexico or Arizona. In the latter case they might meet up with the Pearsons who were leaving Hanover to spend two months in Tucson, Ariz. Dorothy Knapp is making her permanent home 10515 94th Ave., No. Largo, Fla. The Les Gibsons will enjoy their boat at Fort Lauderdale until they take it north in June. The regular Floridians are at the moment laughing at the rest of us but spring will be coming and Florida can be hot in the summer time. The latest classmate to take up residence there is Deac Trask, at Daytona Beach. Incidentally Deac is having his book of poetry published which Marion describes as an American Saga.
A letter from Mrs. Elliott, Schuyler Dodge's secretary, confirms our plans for our informal reunion there in June. To keep the facts straight, I quote from her letter. "I note what you have put in the current issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE and this is very good. The dates for the 1911ers for 1967 are June 28, 29, and 30 and the rate for these three days will be the same as last year, namely $14.00 daily, per person, full American Plan. Any of the classmates wishing to stay over the weekend, the regular rates will apply."
It would be appreciated if any classmates are planning to be a part of this group if you would notify me. So far seven couples have done so.
This occasion will also give you an opportunity to congratulate Mary on having acquired her twelfth grandchild. This makes an even split between boys and girls with six each. Jonathan Dodge was born to John and Lydia in Florida.
Our sympathy goes to Carl and HelenWaterbury in the death of their son, Palmer '38. He died Nov. 23 in the New Rochelle Hospital from an inoperable brain tumor after a long illness and months of helplessness.
It is good news from Livie Chase that Bill was so much better that they flew to Mississippi for the holidays with the children and her brother and their recently married grandson.
Ruth Backus is hereby invited to carry out her threat which is: "Every summer I think I will get to Hanover but don't, but really intend to go to Whitefield this year. I went to Burlington for Thanksgiving via White River on beautiful Interstate Highway 91. What a highway." This reference to 91 prompts me to state that except for a space in Northampton and Holyoke, you can start at White River Junction and travel south over controlled highways all the way to North Carolina, with many miles of such highways below there.
Jinks Morton says: "1966 is proving to be quite a year for him and Bab. The first great-grandchild was born Nov. 10. She is the granddaughter of Henry Jr. '39. Our granddaughter Marcia is to be married December 23."
Miriam Morris had the promise of a big New Year's party with her entire family including her son from California, Dee and their three boys, and her brother, making the count eighteen strong.
Frank Whitcomb has made a further report on his life and accommodations at the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown, Penna., and they will be of interest to anyone who is looking for care and comfort as retirement draws near. He has a good sized room comfortably furnished, private toilet facilities, ample closet space, located on the third floor and reached by automatic elevator. The entertainment furnished includes two movies a week, card parties, band concerts, entertainment and dance for Halloween, New Year's Eve, Valentine's Day, and St. Patrick's Day, bus trips to Philadelphia ball games, Ice Capades and Shrine Circus. His final words are "I would be glad to see any of the 1911 crowd who come through here."
Harold Card writes that his wife Ethel had made good progress from her recent illness and they were looking forward to the time when a drive to Hanover will be the treat that it has always been.
We, who missed Hazel Russell at Whitefield last June, were glad of the letter from her and Jack with their Christmas greetings saying that after six months she was recovered from her fall. Her family news is that Margery and her three children and Larry with his two are living in Atlanta. Jack Jr. is practicing law in New York City. He has three children and his daughter, Pat, will be graduated from Wells College next June and married to a Cornell man that same month.
