Most of this space will be dedicated this month to men of 1934 who recently achieved new distinction in pursuit of their life's goals - and to those departed classmates who, in death, will live as a part of the College as long as books endure.

First, a salute to three men for honored accomplishment:

Dr. Henry Rosen, Director of the Bridgewater (Mass.) State College Audio-Visual Department. His department has been awarded a $50,000 grant for advanced study in the education media area — doubtless because of Hank's pioneering in this field. The grant will enable Hank to conduct an institute next summer for thirty successful candidates, mostly from southern Massachusetts, so they may upgrade their skills and abilities as educational media specialists. After his graduation from Dartmouth, Hank received his certificate from the University of Paris, and his M.A. and a Doctorate in Education from Boston U. His wife, Rea, is head of the Foreign Language Department of the Abington (Mass.) School department.

Al Cotton - Elected chairman of the board of trustees of Worcester (Mass.) State Hospital. Al, a trustee there since 1963, also has been elected first vice president of the state organization of the Massachusetts State Hospital Trustees Association.

Bob Bennett - Named national product manager, petroleum packaging, for the fibre can division of Container Corporation of America. Bob will continue as national product manager of beverage packaging, with headquarters at Valley Forge, Pa. He joined the firm in 1948.

As promised last month, we report now on one of the worthiest projects undertaken by the Class of 1934 - the Memorial Book Program. Funds from the Class Treasury are used to purchase books of substantial value as a gift to the College Library. Each deceased classmate is memorialized by a book. The volume that is selected carries his name on a special bookplate.

Seventy-six classmates have been so memorialized—Fred Acer, Jack Adams, Martin Adams*, Dick Banfield, Bill Barrett, Dave Baxter, Marty Braun*, Frank Bridges, Steve Briggs, Al Brown*, Jack Bruckner, Don Buckbee, Bill Callihan, Tom Clark, George Coppenrath, Ed Cullen*, Orv Dryfoos, Dave Eddy*, Lee Eggleston*, Bill Embry, Frank Engel, Coleman Falk, Jack Fernald, Bob Ford, Ed Fuller, Bill Fullerton*, Arnold Golding, Bill Goss, George Green, Lew Green, Bud Hall, Gerry Hall, Bill Hartman*, Ed Heffernan, Brad Hill, Deane Howland, Harry Ingram*, Walt Keady, A l Koch, Roy Latham, Tom Leslie, Chuck Lippe, Jack Madden, Jack Mahan, A l Marks, Clarence Marks*, Bill Martin*, Wil Maynard, Steve Meigher, Bob Michelet, Bob Miller, Don Moir, Ed Moldenke*, Ned Mudge, Bob Oare, Jack O'Brien, Smitty O'Brien, Jack Odell, Pat O'Reilly, Gus Paul*, Bob Peters, Jack Risberg*, Bud Shafer, Dunk Sheppard*, Nat Shimberg, Bill Smith*, Kirk Spitler, Ross Stevens, Jim Sullivan*, Ben Twiss, Trep Watts, Ed Wentworth*, Harry Wheelock, Bob Williamson, Francis Wolf*, and Bob Young.

Next of kin have been advised by the Class Secretary that the Class of 1934 has provided a book in memory of his or her loved one. There has been some difficulty locating next of kin of 19 deceased classmates - those whose names appear above with an asterisk. We would appreciate help in obtaining names and addresses of their nearest relatives.

There have been a number of warm and gracious responses from among next of kin we have, reached.

Rita Keady, Walt's widow, writes: "Michele, Tom and I wish to extend to the Class of 1934 our deep gratitude for their purchase of a book to be added to. the Dartmouth College Library in memory of Walter. We find this gesture extremely heartwarming."

Rachel D. Fernald, Jack's widow, expressed thanks to the class for "the book in memory of my husband. I know that he would be greatly honored by this."

Don Buckbee's widow, Mrs. Madeline B. Balsbaugh, expressing "deep appreciation ... for the fine tribute to Don," wrote: "Our family has kept in close touch with the Dartmouth campus over the years. Our son, Robert, was a member of the Class of 1957 and during those years we were in Hanover frequently. Robert is married and has two children, Robert, 4 years old, and Susan, 3. Donald Jr. graduated from Pennsylvania State University and is a captain in the Army. He is now attending language school in Washington. They have two children, Cheryl, 8 years, and Donald III, eight months. Marcia, our daughter, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1964 and has gone back to Pitt as Assistant Dean of Women."

Tom Clark's widow, Mrs. Darcey Jesser, expressed "heartfelt thanks," and added: "We are proud to have one son at Dartmouth, '69, one in Vietnam and another in Wall Street. They are all pleased as is our daughter living in England and about to produce our third grandchild." She postscripted that she is now married to a Princetonian, '36, "who also has four children and we have one of our own."

From Mrs. Frank L. Engel: "I am very grateful to the Class of 1934 for remembering Frank with a donation of a book in his name to the Dartmouth Library. This is most appropriate as Frank was tremendously interested in libraries. He served on the committee of the Duke Medical Library for all the years he was there.... The Medical Library has set up a special section of a collection of non-technical books in his name to indicate his broad interests in humanity...."

Jack O'Brien's Mary wrote: "Jack would have been constantly committing the cardinal sin of pride were he alive to see the wonderful progress our children have made. Denny is in his third year of graduate work at Harvard: aim, Ph.D. in Math. Terry is in his first year of grad school at MIT: aim, Ph.D. in Chemistry....I have two more who will do almost as well and another two ... in high school and grammar school. ... Thank the Class of '34 for the book donated in Jack's memory. I am eternally grateful...."
