Good summer?
Now, the russet and gold on the hillsides, the crisp morning air and smoke spiraling lazily from farmhouse chimneys herald a new season. And a new generation summons us to look ahead. So we start the academic year with a salute to:
'70 sons of '34 - Joining the Dartmouth fellowship are these eight sons of men of 1934: Bruce A. Bordett (Dan's boy); WilliamJ. Fraser (Thor); Alan L. Kibbe (Gordon);Edward C. Luck (Dave); Bruce B. Roberts(Johnny); Richard C. Wallace (Harry); William B. Wilson (Bill), and John S. Wolf(Fred's lad).
FUTURE'S BOOK - Looking farther down the road, we happily report the arrival of two potential members of the Class of 1988: Hank Werner's first grandchild, Christopher Michael Hanson, born in Honolulu July 20 to Hank's daughter, Pat, and Marine Lieut. Michael F. Hanson 2d (Yale '65 and himself the son of a Yale man); Ye Old Scribe's second grandson, Bruce M. Kelleher Jr., born to the Kellehers (both Maryland '62) in Alexandria, Va., April 6.
Incidentally, Hank is no rocking chair grandpaw. He and his boy Tom won the father-son championship of their golf club. And before she flew to Honolulu to take care of Christopher, Grandma Liz paired with Hank to win a bridge tournament.
ROUND THE GIRDLED EARTH- Lois and Moe Frankel back from a series of international and economic conferences which took them to Estoril, Lisbon, Athens, Bombay, Bangkok, Tokyo, and home via Hawaii and San Francisco. . . . Dr. Em Day now in the midst of a 10-week lecture tour of Australia and New Zealand (as guest of those governments), then on to the Universities of Singapore and Hong Kong with a wind-up conference in Tokyo.
A Requiem - Summer was a time of sadness for the Bob Ford family and for all of us who had the privilege of Bob's friendship. Bob, who brought musical happiness into many, many lives as a member of the old Barbary Coast Orchestra and later as a choir director in his church, passed on July 16 - five weeks after his Marine Lieutenant son Doug was married. Bob's widow, Jean, expressing appreciation to the Class of 1934 for its sympathy, writes with simple eloquence: "Bob loved Dartmouth very much." And Dartmouth mourns the loss of a loved and loyal son.

Profile - There was no mistaking the distinguished profile beaming at readers of the August 23 New York Times, and the picture outline made the identification even more positive: "Maj. Gen. J. Clarence DaviesJr., U.S.A.F.R." - chairman of a U.S.O. Day at the U. S. Tennis Championships at Forest Hills.
HISTORY—Revealed for the first time this summer was the role played by OrvDryfoos, as publisher of the New York Times, in the Cuban crisis. One episode involved his decision to tone down a dispatch describing plans for an imminent invasion of Cuba; another the withholding of a story on Soviet missiles in Cuba - both decisions taken in the interest of national security.
How he figured importantly in history was reviewed by the late President Kennedy in a letter written May 28, 1963 to Orv's widow, Marian, shortly after Orv died. It said in part: "I had known him for a number of years and two experiences I had with him in the last two years gave me a clear insight into his unusual qualities of mind and heart. One involved a matter of national security - the other his decision to refrain from printing ... the news, which only the Times man possessed, on the presence of Russian missiles in Cuba, upon my informing him that we needed 24 hours more to complete our preparations.
"This decision of his made far more effective our later actions and thereby contributed greatly to our national safety ... I did want you to know that a good many people some distance away had the same regard for Orvil's character as did those who knew him best. . . ."
Wedding Belle - The late Steve Meigher's daughter, Ann Denise, engaged to wed Dr. Henry Louis Smith, 2nd, this month in Schenectady, N. Y.
MAIL CALL - Rollie Morton postcards from Florida that he has enrolled son Gordie at University of Miami for oceanography studies. . . . Bill Wilson reports that daughter Sue spent the summer in Nigeria as one of Hanover's two Community Ambassadors under The Experiment in International Living program. Daughter Debbie and her husband, Dave Pierpont, after two years in southern Indiana, have returned to the New Hampshire area to teach - Deb in Newport; Dave in Hanover. And son Bill a Dartmouth freshman. . . .
SALUTE - To Class Agent Bill Emerson and his assistants for a monumental effort on behalf of the 1966 Alumni Fund - and to all 1934s who sweetened the kitty.
