Buckling down to writing a column on this gorgeous spring day recalls the agony of trying to concentrate on preparing for comps during those brilliantly beautiful May days 34 years ago. Just as it was then, the temptation to goof off is great. But the call to duty comes through loud and clear, and virtue triumphs once again (in a photo-finish). So, answering the summons to the task, let the Class of 1934 know that:

Dr. Calvin Calmon, one of 1934's top scientists, has been named Group Research Consultant by Ritter Pfaudler Corporation of Birmingham, N. J. He will be responsible for coordinating research programs of operating divisions within the firm's Chemical Group. Cal, who got his doctorate in physical chemistry from Yale, is one of the foremost authorities on ion exchange technology. He holds several patents on ion exchange processes and has authored numerous scientific and technical articles. Cal is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for Advancement of Science and the New Jersey Academy of Science ... to mention just a few.

Art Grimes keeps going places — literally and figuratively. He's just been elected vice president of Benton & Bowles International, as well as of the parent company. As such, he will be management supervisor of B & B's far-flung international business, zeroing in on the Pacific area, which he knows so well from his years of service with the Interpublic Group and McCann-Erickson International. At one time or another, Art has been an advertising expert in residence in Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, and Mexico City. Now, there'll be more places to visit.

To Cal and Art, Congrats!

WEDDING BELLS — Widower LesReeve married to Mrs. Elizabeth Kendall Allen, a widow, at Passaic, N. J. The new Mrs. Reeve is a graduate of Paterson Teachers College and is a teacher. Les, of course, is a member of a New York investment banking firm and a member of the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange... . Steve Meigher's widow, Denny, married to H. R. Summerhayes .in Schenectady, N. Y. ... and Bill Wilson, top man at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, married to chief of nurses, Irja Hill.

PRESS CLIPPINGS — When the nation's governors gathered in Washington early in the spring, two noted Dartmouth alumni made page 1 in a photographic huddle on 1968 Republican presidential campaign strategy — our Oz Ruebhausen and N. Y. Gov. Nelson Rockefeller '30. That was just before Rocky declared himself out of the race. ... Nice guy Jeff Jackson thoughtfully sent along a clipping from the Journal of Commerce reporting on legislative recommendations by the New York State Insurance Department's Special Committee on Insurance Holding Companies, chaired by none other than the same Mr. Ruebhausen. Oz also is senior partner in a New York law firm, chairman of the Russell Sage Foundation and former counsel to the U. S. Office of Scientific Research and Development. ... And from Bob Naramore '35 comes a tearsheet from the Bridgeport (Conn.) Sunday Post with a three-column photo showing Bui Haist swapping consumer talk with government consumer affairs chief Betty Furness at a meeting of the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association in Washington. Bill is first vice president of the Association and president of Sprague Meter Co., in Bridge-port. ...

SMASH HIT - The loyalty that is a hallmark of the Dartmouth family was never better demonstrated than a few Sundays ago when the Dartmouth Glee Club came to town (Washington, D. C.). Despite the competition of a perfect spring day when Washington's famed cherry blossoms and magnolias were abloom in all their splendor, the Glee Club packed the Mayflower Hotel's Grand Ballroom for a concert that was among the best yet. Never have we heard a more moving version of our personal favorite - "Dartmouth Undying." The young men are great! ...

In the sell-out audience we spotted JimBayles, Tom Beers, George Collins and - all the way from Buffalo, N. Y. - AceMiller. The Millers' timing was perfect - Ace and Helen just happened to be in town visiting their son Doug '65 en route to a golfing vacation in Williamsburg, Va., and Myrtle Beach, S. C. Ace, looking ship-shape, is district manager of Revere Copper and Brass - his sole employer since graduation (except for the U. S. Navy in three wartime years). ... He's the grandpaw of a beautiful little girl.

CHATTER - The name of another grandpappy - Hank Martorano (he's got five granddaughters) - popped up recently in correspondence with Ted Gregory. All of which recalled a long-ago Yale weekend trip in a rented jalopie with less horsepower than a spavined mule. Driving back to Hanover, Hank, despite a series of valiant tries, ran a red light. He got a quick motorcycle cop escort. When Hank's vintage vehicle finally rolled to a halt, the grim gendarme walked up, whipped out his book and growled: "Okay, buddy, what's your excuse for running that light? . . . Make it good." Hank did. Replying with disarming forthrightness, he stammered: "I'm sorry, sir. You see, I don't have any brakes." No ticket! Hank has gone on to become vice principal of Ansonia (Conn.) High School....

Gregory, Development Director at Quinnipiac College in Hamden, Conn, (greatest town in the world), reports that he and Betty have built a cabin in the White Mountains to which "we escape when the heat of battle gets too hot." He and Betty, both ardent skiers, have taken up snowshoeing (nice kind of talk for a hot day in May)....

TIME TO REMEMBER — 34's 34th reunion June 17-18-19. And the Alumni Fund - deadline June 30!
