For the third time in seven years a team of undergraduate mathematicians from the College finished in the "top ten" in a national college mathematics competition. The Dartmouth entry this year finished eighth in a field of 208 colleges and universities.
Dartmouth sophomore J. Lawrence Carter of Ardmore, Pa., placed in the top 35 of 1,526 individual contestants in the 27th annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition. In addition to Mr. Carter, the Dartmouth team included Sidney W. Marshall '65 of Milwaukee, Wis., and David L. Salsbury '68 of Stamford, Conn.
In 1962 the Dartmouth undergraduate mathematicians placed second in this contest, and in 1961 they placed fifth. Ahead of the Big Green in the rankings this year were teams from Harvard, M.I.T., University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and Princeton.
