It is our sad duty to report that WilliamChisholm passed away in his sleep on Friday morning, March 24, at Sea Island, in Georgia. This was the day before his 72nd birthday. Many members of the Class who knew Bill in college will be sad to learn of his death. See "In Memoriam" in this or a subsequent issue for more complete information.
We were very impressed with the smoothness with which the Florida Pow-Wow was run. Certainly Howie and Ann Park deserve high praise for the splendid way in which they ran the whole show. Many pictures were taken; one of Ed Healey and GeneMarkey who were having an exceedingly good time together. After some pressure, Ed agreed to sing one of Gene's songs which he had written for the Junior Prom show while he was in college. Ed's endeavor was strong but his tune was a little off now and then; we had a good laugh and it stirred up many pleasant memories of undergraduate days. We want to thank Howie and Ann and all of the Florida group who helped to make this Pow-Wow the big sucess that it was.
George and Pat Stoddard have just returned from a trip to El Salvador and Honduras. They had a real good time crawling around the Mayan and Pipil ruins. They made some paintings and many sketches on their trip. When they returned to Miami they took a cruise with the Howie Parks on Howie's boat, the "Anzark."
Ed and Clara Felt were in Vienna from May 8 to 11. We had a long letter from Sewall Strout from Rome thanking JakeBingham for the Class Birthday Card. They are staying in a hotel suggested by StanJones who stayed in this hotel the last time he was in Rome visiting his daughter and her family. The Strouts are visiting their son and his family who are now residents in Rome for a few months while he is lecturing at the Center for American Studies under a Fulbright Foundation grant. The Strouts went to Portugal during the first days of March and had an unexpected but very pleasant 1918 reunion with DaveSkinner and Francis Christy, who were on the same ship. After short visits to Portugal, Spain, and Greece they went to Rome where they state the city traffic probably is the worst they know of outside of the Los Angeles freeways. He says that he and Peg are planning to attend our Fiftieth, but it will not be the same for them as in the past when Parker and Marge Poole were with them.
Amos Blandin was recently honored by the New Hampshire Bar Association. At an evening banquet honoring Amos, U. S. Senator Norris Cotton paid tribute to Amos' long years of. service to the State of New Hampshire.
Ben Mugridge writes to thank us for his Birthday Card, though he does question the need of reminding old people that they are getting old and senile. He is now semi-retired. He writes that he is still very active in civic affairs and from time to time does a bit of consulting work. He is still serving as Mayor of the village of Asharoken and up to his neck in Democratic politics.
Harvey Hood sent me a very fine picture of Ed Noyes and his wife which was taken in Phoenix, Ariz. Ed is now fully retired and has built a new home in West Chatham on Cape Cod.
Phil Tusting thanks us for his Birthday Card which he says he appreciates to an increasing degree with each year that sneaks by. He writes: "For the last year and a half I have been up to my ears wrestling with the problem of disposing of my business, which has been in the family since 1883." Recently for the first time he is seeing daylight, even though he will have to continue on the job for another year or so. He was very complimentary about Jake Bingham's ROAR and states that he gets a great kick out of those articles about undergraduate life when we were in college.
A letter from Spud Proctor from Ft. Pierce, Fla., thanks Jake Bingham for his Birthday Card. After much discussion Mabel and he have decided that their boat was more than they could handle, and sold it. They spent last year in Franklin, N. H. In the late winter, however, they took a trip to Florida and were persuaded to purchase a house in Ft. Pierce. Mabel went down in October while Spud went hunting in Maine where he got a lot of exercise. He joined her in November and they have enjoyed this past winter very much living in their new home. They expect to come north around the first of May. He sends his best regards to all his classmates.
Tom Tarrant writes that he was very pleased with the Class Agents meeting in New York this year. He went with SylMorey and Steve Mahoney. Tom's daughter Jean is attending Colby College in Maine.
The March 2 North Andover Citizen carries a three-column article covering ClintCarvell's retirement as minister of the Trinitarian Congregational Church, where he has been pastor for the past 42 years. Clint is the senior clergyman in North Andover. He officially retired on April 8 but will remain until September 1 while the church is securing a new minister.
While in college Clint was president of the Christian Association, a member of the student governing body and a winner of the Barge Gold Medal for oratory. While he was president of the Christian Association he formed ten Sunday Schools taught by Dartmouth students in ten schoolhouses within ten miles of the college. In his junior year at Dartmouth he served as a minister in the Congregational Church in Wilder, Vt. In 1918 when the two churches in Wilder merged, he became the pastor of churches in Fairlee, Vt., and No. Thetford. In 1921 he was called to serve the Federated Churches of Newmarket, N. H. While in Newmarket he studied at Boston University School of Theology and later at Andover-Harvard School of Theology. On May 6, 1924, he began his pastorate in the Trinitarian Congregational Church of North Andover, Mass., in which parish he has served ever since.
Don't forget that the Class will hold its usual luncheon before the first game in Hanover this fall, at the Montshire Restaurant. This will be before the Holy Cross Game on Oct. 7, 1967. We want as many classmates to show in Hanover as possible. At the moment I have spare reservations at the Chieftain Motel for the weekend of this game. You must let me know not later than July 15 if you wish a reservation at the Chieftain.
Have a good summer! Write me about your trips and any other news.
