Alumni members of the Dartmouth chapter of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity have voted to give the College the sum of $3300 to establish the Lewis D. Stilwell Memorial Fund, honoring the beloved history professor who was killed in an automobile accident four years ago. The fund will function as an endowment, the annual income to provide Baker Library with books on American military history. These books will be identified by an appropriate book- plate.

The fund has been made possible through the gifts of Professor Stilwell's fraternity brothers at both Dartmouth and Amherst, and also of other Dartmouth friends. It is hoped that additions to the fund's principal will be made by others who knew and admired him.

"Lew" Stilwell retired in 1959 after 43 years on the Dartmouth faculty. He was known for his brilliant, graphic lectures on the battles of the Civil War and World War II. His celebrated History 25 course was popularly known as "A Battle a Day" and after retirement he transformed his course into a series of evening lectures known as "Battle Nights." These lectures fortunately were taped and the Dartmouth community still enjoys hearing them over WDCR.
