A meeting of the Trustees of Dartmouth College was held at their room in the Parkhurst Administration Building in Hanover, New Hampshire, June 16, 1928.
There were present the President, and Messrs. Parkhurst, Thayer, Brown, Little, Howland, Dußois, Tuttle, Knight, McLane, and Gray.
Resolution Upon the Activities of the President
Mr. Thayer presented a resolution with reference to the demands upon the time and energy of the President, which was put to vote by Mr. Parkhurst and adopted as follows:
Whereas: The increasing burden upon the President of the various contacts which he maintains with the Public, the Alumni, the Faculty, and the Undergraduates, in addition to the increasing administrative duties attached to his position, has been and is a source of great uneasiness to the Board of Trustees, believing as it does, that these insistent and continuous demands upon his time, his energy, and his sympathy must be abated to conserve for him the health and vigor upon which the future of the College so much depends.
The Trustees, individually and collectively, appreciate the very great value which has accrued to the College through his personal attention to these contacts and duties, but they see an even greater potential value to the College and to humanity in the policies and plans for education at Dartmouth which he has inaugurated and the execution of which he alone can direct.
Therefore, with full knowledge that all of the contacts and duties with which he is now burdened will suffer to the extent that they lose the inspiration which his personality brings to them; Be it
Resolved: That the Board of Trustees unanimously affirm their most sincere appreciation of his unselfish devotion to the life and purposes of the College, but enjoin upon the President as his first duty the preparation of a plan which will ensure to him a complete holiday and thereafter a measure of inalienable leisure and in the execution of such a plan the Board of Trustees pledges its hearty cooperation. Acceptance of Gift to Endow the HonorsCoursesVoted: That the Trustees of Dartmouth College gratefully accept a gift of $750,000 from the General Education Board upon the terms suggested, namely, that the Trustees of the College should secure from other sources $750,000 of endowment required to give the College total additional endowment of $1,500,000 to finance the introduction and support of honors courses in Dartmouth College. Voted: That the President be authorized to sign pledges or forms required by the General Education Board to close this agreement.
