The mini-reunion over the Princeton weekend was a great success in all ways, not withstanding the score of the game. Over 6000 alumni, that's one out of five of all living alumni, were on hand to inaugurate the new east stands at Memorial Field. I don't have a full accounting of the '44's who were on board but did hear about a good bunch of them like the Hose Craigs, the Stan Barrs, the Lefty Bogans who were there with the Fred Millses; Hap Bush, of course was on hand and I understand was fully appreciative of the fine spread of food that was organized. Royal Alworth who hadn't been back to school in eons was among the elite, same with Buzz Benner. Organizer Bob McLaughry headed the local contingent of the Fritz Hiers, the JimBrownings, and the Wemo Epplys. Reunion organizers Johnny Morse and Bill McElnea were there with Ray Zrike. There can be little doubt that these fall get-togethers will be an ever growing annual event.
I'm delighted to report to you that Harrythe Rock Davidson hasn't changed an iota. Oh, his hair has whitened but every strand is still there; his weight right where it was, his predilection for the big deal and his web of angles for attaining it still as strong as ever. He's currently commuting from Dallas to Atlanta where he's got a giant development complex underway. Who's captain of the castle? Well, Harry never was known as an animal lover but Dottie was. When you visit them you'll meet a brace of Basset hounds, some puppies, seven (count 'em) fish bowls, then go out to see some of the boys' companions in the form of snakes, turtles, and other predatory creatures. I suspect that Harry's powder blue Cadillac is the biggest in Dallas. He claims it's just one of those standard models. Possibly standard from the lot they make for Saudi Arabian chieftains.
Marketer Jack Grimm has received a lot of good press in recent months. The New York Times had an interesting article recently about Jack and Colgate's battle plans to knock P & G out of first place in the dentifrice market. And it appears they have the product (with FDA backing) and an advertising plan to accomplish the job. You can watch the battle on your tube.
I hope you're being kind to Fritz Hier and getting in your photo and autobiograhy for our 25th reunion book. Poor Fritz has a hopeless enough task without having to do a lot of needless follow-up work. I do see that on the West Coast he's got McLoud, Ettinger, Pennington, and Ranger pushing the project. The book will, doubtlessly, be one of the best and most frequently used in your library. And your participation is vital to its success.
Recently just settled on the West Coast is Don Smith, senior vice president of McCann Erickson. He's director of marketing for the Western region and the poor soul has Hawaii in his bailiwick. Don and his family are making their home in Belvedere, a great spot across the bay from S.F. and not too far from Sausalito. As one more gift, Maria presented Don with a baby daughter in August.
Don Hinkley is heading up the Third Century Fund in the Cincinnati area and chaired the impressive kick-off dinner. His brief closing remarks were so excellent that one recalled the final speaker the day they dedicated the cemetery at Gettysburg. When he isn't Dartmouthing, Don continues pushing Emery Industries to greater sales and earnings records interspersed with commuting trips to Europe.
Another of the faithful, Phil Penberthy, set a series of records in Alumni Fund work last spring bringing '44 to their largest dollar volume, largest average gift, and most members of the Century Club. It is always very impressive to get Phil's list of you guys who gave to the Alumni Fund. All of you are to be congratulated on another great performance.
