I'm not much of a radio or TV fan .. . except on that one night every month when these columns have to be prepared. And then I give in to the ozone completely... sit through Stop the Music and Walter Windbag, watch an assortment of gum shoes and hoodlums shoot it out, look at women demonstrate beauty preparations in the shower, and smoke peculiar brands of cigarettes. I even take an active interest in the weather reports. But when the curtain rings down on the midnight movie, that's it! ... there's nothing left to do but wonder what to write about.
There are a few items, however. Fred ("The Flyer") Daley and family have left lush Shelton, Conn., for Waterville, Quebec. A highly successful production man in the field of sponge rubber, Fred will ply his trade with the Canadian Sponge Rubber Products Ltd. up there.
Unable to dim the glitter of Broadway, Canajoharie lost Bob Rieboiu back to the Big Town. Bob is now associated with the Eric Hoffman Chrysler-Plymouth outfit on St. Nicholas Ave... . and from the tone of some of his promotional work, there should be a great many more Chryslers' and Plymouths' horns supporting the refrain of the Manhattan towers.
Dick Ritchie, whom we tagged in error as an artist with McCann Erickson in San Francisco, is actually an A.E. on the Del Monte account. The next time you see a dead, tired, old prune gracing a full page of Life, you'll know who put it there.
Dr. Bill Brewster has settled down in Chestnut Hill, Mass., at Hancock Village . . . that distinguished proving ground for cocktail parties. The last we've heard from Carl Koenig, he was rolling along in a trailer someplace in eastern Pennsylvania. Royal Alworth is establishing himself in the real estate and investment business in Duluth.
As evidence of the prudent handling of your funds, Gus Pratt wants to avoid the expense of another mailing, and uses this space as a reminder to you guys who have not sent in your class dues... to do so at an early date. As of January i, a little over half had come through. This has always been a department in which we have shone. Gus has asked me to express his appreciation to all of you fellows who have obliged, also for the many accompanying messages.
Gus and Chubby and the youngsters, "Buzz," Phil and Nancy, seem to be thriving on the Florida climate .. . and Par-Ken Limeade, (the bread and butter), which Gus describes as a "fresh frozen product available nationally and, incidentally, a wonderful mixer."
They're located on Route §i, the key to the Keys, and afford a fine watering hole for any of you political aspirants going down to investigate the vacation possibilities.
Larry Bailey and Dave McGuire are down there, Larry in the electrical business and Dave selling yachts.
We had dinner the other evening with Jimand Carol Briggs and Bud and Nancy Coith. After having disposed of a brood of guinea hens (under bell) and the major world prob- lems, we bantered about some local buckeyes. I was pleased to know that Dave Templeton, captain of the Ohio State football team in '48, has settled down as teacher-coach up at Franklin. Joe Vancisin, assistant to Ozzie Cowles at the University of Minnesota, will be bringing his aggregation down this way in the next few weeks. They've already tripped up Kentucky this year. Hardie Calwell is a travelling man, out of Chattanooga, and blows into town every so often with a good tail wind. Lamar Ager, who left us in his freshman year, picked up his M.D. at North Carolina, finished at Johns Hopkins and has set up shop in Birmingham. Up Columbus way, Bud Baker is fast becoming a town father, operating a very succesful art and photography studio.... Bob Davis is a dentist there (I believe he and Eric Barradale are the only ones in the class) ... and Dr. PaulCarroll has returned to his home town for an assignment at the University Hospital in Co- lumbus.
The American Banker recently carried a piece about Ed Crawford Hills' appointment to the credit department staff of the Central National Bank of Cleveland. Might wind up Chairman of the Democratic Party.
Down in Oklahoma City, Bob ("Teeny")Riggs is with the Carter Oil Company as Division Industrial Relations Manager. Carter is an affiliate of Standard Oil of New Jersey . .. and, I suspect, of R. J. Riggs. He speaks of having two unused bed rooms.
Apparently that Spanish frigate which Fritzand Joan tjier were dickering for foundered in the same storm with the Flying Enterprise, for the latest report is that they are en route to Istanbul, courtesy of Radio Free Europe, where the Fritzer will serve as an information gathering officef. As a parting shot, they did take one more crack at the Alpine ski circuit. Sounds like another Halliburton to me.
Romantically... the old slugger Phil W.Brown and Virginia Mauger of Philadelphia announced their engagement last month. Phil is at the Pennsylvania Medical School.
And in the wedding processions ... Marine Lt. Dick Reed led pretty Joan Berger, of Dennisport, Mass., down the carpet last November 12. Incidentally, Joan was a Phi Bete at Mt. Holvoke. And in Sudbury on December 8 Jack Sanders and Elizabeth Hill of Deer Island, Me., became Mr. and Mrs. They'll make their home in Cambridge.
I think that's just about it... except that Wild Bill Hale, the Charlie Friemans and the Arnold Warners worked their way back to the hills in recent weeks.
Please get your dues in to Gus early and salve his ulcer.
