The Ledyard Canoe Club at Dartmouth has announced that it will work for the establishment of the proposed 56,000-acre National Recreation Area for the Connecticut River Valley. A plan for the combined recreational development and conservation of the Connecticut River Valley has been prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, and Senator Abraham Ribicoff of Connecticut has announced that he plans to introduce legislation to implement the proposal.
Members of the Canoe Club, as part of their active support of the conservation plan, hope to create interest among other colleges in the Connecticut Valley, such as Amherst, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Springfield, Trinity, Wesleyan, Williams, and the state universities of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont.
Since 1921 the Ledyard Canoe Club has staged annual canoe trips down the Connecticut from Hanover to Long Island Sound. The increasing pollution of the river and commercial developments along its banks are alarmingly detrimental to the preservation of this historic waterway, according to club officers.
