Bruce Bergquist, who teaches at the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., has been attracting a lot of attention around town by running several miles each morning and talking about entering the Boston Marathon on April 19. A Pottstown resident, Charles M. Donovan '43 class secretary, writes, "Whether he intends to enter the Marathon remains to be seen. But he is putting on a tremendous act with his roadwork (and looks in wonderful health). In fact, I almost ran over him last week." A local sports columnist, in a long article about Bruce, said his strange new zeal was prompted by a combination of "middle-age sluggishness" and the fact that he's a native of Massachusetts. Bruce is quoted as pointing out that last year's winner averaged about five minutes per mile during the entire distance, 26 miles. "I could never run a five-minute mile," he added, "but three and a half hours sounds good to me." The columnist wrote that "Bergquist doesn't believe conditioning is the biggest problem facing entrants. 'lt's blisters,' he said." Before winter weather set in, Bruce was accompanied on some of his morning runs by one of his three children, nine-year-old daughter Berit. The columnist also duly recorded that "Bergquist's daily training periods have gained him many new friends, including several neighborhood dogs that tag along and keep him company."

Jon (Tim) Anderson has moved into a newly-created spot at Cornell, director of the office of information systems. Previously he'd been director of scholarships and financial aid since 1962. Jon's new job is to develop information and data for day-to-day administration of the entire university, and for long-range planning. A Cornell vice president said Jon "will be working with several University officers in identifying their individual and collective informational needs and in recommending procedures and methods to meet these needs." Jon has been at Cornell since 1960, and has a master's degree in education from the University of Virginia. He has served as a member of the Ithaca Board of Education.

Also promoted: Don Hummel moved up to vice president in the trust department of one of Chicago's top banks, the Northern Trust Company. He's responsible for the bank's business in Wisconsin and lowa. Don's been with the bank since 1957, after receiving an M.B.A. at Michigan.

Another banker, Dick Brown, is now an assistant vice president at Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Co. He was formerly with Tucker Anthony and R.L. Day in New Bedford, Mass.

Jack Sickler, an IBM marketing manager seen strolling through Chicago's Loop recently with the glint of a million-dollar sale in his eye, says it's not so. John Barker is president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association in Dayton.

Jack Bailey has given up installing lawn irrigation systems, wife Sally reports, to devote more time to studies on his Ph.D. in education at the University of Florida. He's scheduled to complete the grind in March 1969. Of course, if it doesn't pan out, he's already an established success in the sprinkling business, as well as several others he's been practicing on the side.

Two Air Force officers promoted to major: one is Glenn Wilson, still officially listed as missing since he was shot down and engulfed on the ground by North Vietnamese on August 7, 1967. His mother writes that "his last message was, 'Well fellows, guess I had better sign off as there is someone here who wants my radio.' If he is alive and is a prisoner, as we sincerely hope and pray, his sense of humor will help to sustain him, I am sure." A courageous classmate, and a courageous mother. The other flier promoted is Tom Partridge, who's at Norton Air Force Base in California. Tom also reports a new addition, Mary Susan, born last September 17 at San Bernardino.

Doctors Jim Mickle and Larry Pilchman have been drafted into the Navy as lieutenant commanders. Larry writes he was plucked from his "warm and oh so lucrative obstetrical practice" in Long Island and is now at Charleston Naval Hospital in Charleston, S. C. Jim is at Oakland Naval Hospital, conveniently close to home in Sausalito. He was previously in charge of a psychiatric residency program for San Francisco Community Mental Health Services.

A doctor in a different field, Joel Kennedy, completed a postgraduate course in orthodontics at Columbia. He practices in Talcottville, Conn. Gus Aberle left the steel industry last year to become a sales representative in Philadelphia for Lufthansa German Airlines. John Laverty, practicing medicine in Quincy, Mass., found time to become engaged to Liane Lang of Milton, a nurse. They plan to say their vows in May.

Matt Weinberg, always on the go, was elected president of the Young Adults Division of the Jewish Walfare Federation in San Francisco. The organization, he writes, raises funds and "carries out a series of social, cultural, and educational programs." It takes a gift of $25 to join, and there are more than 1,500 members, Matt reports. He also mentions seeing a number of classmates in the Bay Area, including Army Captain Bob Blum, now doing his neurosurgery at the Presidio; Bob Sachs, "one of the city's leading oral surgeons"; mortgage banker Wayne Cliff; and coffee exec. Gene Elsbree.

Mike Ellovich writes that he's still the psychologist for a number of private schools and also for the Family Relations Division of Connecticut's Superior Court. More important, his 10-year-old son David is playing "biddy basketball" and "seems to have learned to shoot with same frequency as his father. ..." I wonder if they ever did get those dents out of the Alumni Gym backboard?

Jim Kerbin has found an exotic spot at St. Croix Country "Day School, on St. Croix in the Virgin. Islands. Tony Kruelen's latest peregrination around the Orient with American Foreign, Insurance Association is from Singapore to Bangkok.

Hod Symes is assistant to the president of Roger Clothing Co. in St. Joseph, Mo. BillLenderking, who's seen a good bit of the globe as an information officer for Uncle Sam, shipped out to Viet Nam recently after special language training in Washington. Draftee Larry Metz is an Army doctor at Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, Pa.
