$250,000 for Medical School

James C. Chilcott '20, who retired last year as vice chairman of the Warner Lambert Pharmaceutical Company, has given the Dartmouth Medical School $250,000 toward a model auditorium-laboratory.

Estimated total cost of the pioneer installation is $700,000, part of which will be underwritten by matching federal funds. The Chilcott Auditorium-Labora-tory will be located between Strasenburgh Hall dormitory and a proposed new teaching and research building. It is a vital part of the curriculum and plant changes planned for the Medical School as part of the Third Century Fund goals.

The new laboratory will provide each student with such aids as closed-circuit television consoles and microscopes, and enable the lecturer to refer to a master television screen showing videotapes of laboratory experiments. It can be divided into two units, one seating 100 students and the other 70, and will be used mainly for classes in anatomy, pathology, embryology, and histology.

In announcing the gift, Dean Carleton B. Chapman said, "Modern visual and audio techniques will make the teaching more efficient than in the traditional laboratory. Our emphasis will be on a broad conceptual approach, rather than fussy and often irrelevant detail."

Mr. Chilcott has been a long-time benefactor of the College. He has served as a member of the Medical School's capital campaign committee and is currently an Overseer of Tuck School.
