Senator Jacob K. Javits of New York, one of the key figures in this year's fluctuating Republican political picture, will be the College's 1968 Commencement speaker.
A U.S. Senator since 1956, and reelected by a million-vote margin six years ago, Senator Javits will interrupt his campaign for a third straight term to come to Hanover on June 16.
Senator Javits had served four terms in the House of Representatives when he was elected attorney general of New York in 1954. His political career has been largely concerned with civil rights, civil liberties, and foreign economic policies, although he has also worked for legislation in other related areas.
The Senator was born in 1904 in New York's Lower East Side. He attended Columbia University and graduated from New York University Law School in 1926. He currently holds eleven honorary degrees.
