Windsor C. Batchelder '19 was cited as Class Newsletter Editor of the Year when class officers met on May 11 in Hanover. The following tribute accompanied the award:
You were a second class seaman for seven months in World War I. For almost seven years you have been a first class Newsletter Editor.
I Dartmouth gave you fifteen credits for your brief Navy service. For the superb job you are still doing as Editor of '19's SMOKE SIGNAL, your Class gives you unlimited credit and hopes the loan committee at your bank has done likewise.
Very few classmates now remember the days in twenty-five when you helped manage the National Credit Office, Inc. in Chicago. But everyone knows that you must have done something right because in no time at all, said a predecessor Newsletter Editor, you became its president. You then settled in Darien, Connecticut and became chief or near-chief of almost everything between Staten Island and Hanover. The list of these includes many College and Class activities, the very distinguished New England Society of New York City, as well as church, school, community and welfare boards and committees.
Following retirement from business you perpetually pursued leads and became privy to personal bits about Class personnel which you surveyed monthly with great interest and pleasure. Your predecessor further states that you beat the bushes up and down the country, calling on hermit and playboy, alike. Some suspect that if the object of your call was not at home, you called on the man next door and wrote him up. It is said that you have personally visited all but ten classmates in the quest of news. You took newsletter writing to new heights never thought possible. In the twinkling of an eye you became President of the Dartmouth Newsletter Editors Association at which you worked with your customary vigor. Patiently you have tried to teach the admiring group; few comprehend, none is able to measure up.
You, the busy Boswell of 1919, seldom settle down between bush-beatings so the College is fortunate to have you here and is honored to designate you by these presents as the Class Newsletter Editor of the Year.
