Benjamin S. Read Jr. '62, president of the Dartmouth Club of Georgia, was honored as Club President of the Year at the annual meeting of Dartmouth club officers in Hanover on Oct 3. Following is the citation which accompanied the award:
From out of the South you came to Hanover, returning to your native state of Georgia to serve not only your family business but your College and her alumni. In 1968 you were elected President of the Dartmouth Club of Georgia, a particularly wise decision for many reasons.
The Dartmouth Club of Georgia, with a total state-wide alumni population of 195, holds four dinner meetings a year with an average attendance of 60. There are also six to eight small group meetings held in support of enrollment activities, and a welcoming event in the spring for accepted high school students. To back up this enrollment effort, your club also provides the manpower for what you term "truth squads" at decision time, to convince as many boys as possible that Dartmouth should be their choice. Ten boys were matriculated in each of the last two classes as compared to five three years ago.
The results of the past year we know did not come easy, but they should have been most gratifying; well attended meetings and an active membership. Your telephone committee paid dividends and your dues campaign with 33% participation gives you the financial support you need.
In July you capped a perfect year as host club for the Stephen Long, Class of 1809, Bicentennial Celebration. This program saluting the founder of Atlanta was open to all alumni in the Southeast. Your expert hand in setting up and following through with the many arrangements for the program made it a memorable occasion.
So tonight, we honor a man who has served his College and Club many times beyond the call of duty. It is our distinct pleasure to recognize you as Club President of the Year.
